Good morning Dps, the Lyman 525 mold is expensive and by the time you but the needed handles, its $100.
I know there was a company that was selling them but forgot the name or some shooters can help.
The good thing is they can be accurate to 4 inch group to 100 yards.

The next best choice is Lee 7/8 oz Drive key slug in wad mold complete for $18 to 20 and quite good to 50 to 60 yards with a proper set up.
Call Midsouth shooters and get the best price.

Once you choose whatever you want I'll gladly help you.
Is this for a rifled barrel or smooth bore ?

The Lyman slugs would primarily be for my rifled 870 barrel but would also like to try them in my Ithaca 51 which is a smooth bore. I appreciate the offer of help. I reload center fire cartridges extensively but this would be my first attempt at shot shells.

I have the Lyman mould and could not be happier with it. If you get one be sure to use pure lead or as close as you can get to it get optimum performance. Also, this thing needs to be heated up with a propane torch and the chamber blackened with soot from a match to start casting good solid slugs right from the start.

Hello Old Ammo, I do have the 12 ga Lyman 525 slug in wad mold too but do not have the 20 ga mold and would have liked to have a few pieces to measure with different wads etc to help my Elite Slug shooters family like this:

Update: l found a seller from Georgia on Gunbroker that is selling the 525 gr 12ga slugs for a reasonable price. I will try that route for now. The only thing that gives me pause is that he lists, "cast from 2-2-96 alloy"; obviously not pure lead. Also i do not have a selection of shotgun powder (have lots of rifle powder). What would be a good choice if I am going to buy 1 lb to get started? I appreciate with everyone pitching in with their advice.

I don't cast with pure lead, unless it's in an aluminum mould like the Lee Drive Key slug.
I use wheel weight, and have never had any problems with penetration.
As far as which powder to use? It will depend a lot on what hull and wads you will use. Blue Dot, Herco, Unique are three I use most. I have loading data that comes supplied with the Lyman mould. If you want a copy, pm me with your email and I'll send you the data.

Pure lead ensures expansion for a larger diameter wound channel without over penetration.

Harder alloys resist expansion for deeper penetration.

Your choice in casting metal all depends on what you are shooting at.

While I've molded and loaded both the Lyman and Lee slugs, I've had better accuracy results with the molded round ball. Out of my Remington 870 12 gauge smoothbore with a rifled choke, a three-inch group at 50 yards off the bench is typical. Having said that, the round ball does not seem to have the knock-down power of the aforementioned slugs. My best accuracy/knock-down has proved to be the Slugs-R-Us in its special wad.
