I’m attempting to figure out the manufacturer of this shotgun. I can see it was proofed in Gardone in 1969 https://imgur.com/gallery/cRfVLi6

The mark that has me stumped is the star inside of the shield.

Simpson Ltd in Galesburg, IL is still operating. You might try contacting them to see what you can find out. https://www.simpsonltd.com/

Simpson sold it to me. They said it was an AYA. I contacted AYA who confirmed it was not. I called Simpson who told me they have some new people in the back who are in training. They did offer a refund if I shipped it back. I sort of like the shotgun so I wanted to figure out what it was before I decided to ship it back

The star within a shield does not appear to be a proof mark. It may be a maker's mark.
E-mail the photos to: info@bancoprovo.it (Gardone Proof House) and enquire if they can I.D. the maker.

I wonder if it was retailed in Sweden or if the tube steel is Swedish? Hopefully Moose Snoot will chime into the discussion????

Can you post images of all the marks on the tubes?

For sure being of Italian manufacture & for export. Definitely not of Spanish origin. Maybe you fancy this catalogue:

Jakt och Fiske - Katalog Nr. 92 - 1952

Allt för jakt och vildmark - 1982

Allt För Jakt och Fiske, Katalog från 1969

En gammal katalog (1969) från Vapen-Depoten i Falun..

130 sidor med årets utbud av jakt- och fiskeutrustning.

Bra skick men några tummade hörn.

Oblekta färgbilder men papperet har gulnat något.

Format 21 * 15 cm.....

The gun was proofed in 1969 so I don’t think it’s going to be in that catalog. Thank you though

Hello

Looks like it has been sold by Vapen-Depoten, yes. If I remember correctly the animal on the tubeset is a bear. Vapen-Depoten sold very many guns and rifles and traded many brands. I have a friend who owns a double, gauge 16, that carries the trade mark of Vapen-Depoten but says AYA on the permit but when looking at the proofs it's clear it's of Belgian origin. I've seen a number of permits for no-name German rifles/shotguns that was either sold as new or rifles/shotguns traded in by Vapen-Depoten and then sold as Husqvarna's/AYA's by Vapen-Depoten. I guess there are still some doubles (as the above mentioned) and rifles with permits saying Husqvarna but they are really of foreign (to Sweden) manufacture and many of them most certainly came through Vapen-Depoten. That's what people did in the 1950-70's, if no one knew what it was it became - on the permit - a Husqvarna, an AYA or something else. Another popular brand over here when no one knew was J.P. Sauer & Sohn. I guess even a fair number of rifles/shotguns outside the permit system was legalized by Vapen-Depoten.

Today the authorities sometimes behave funny when one is given a permit. I have a shotgun marked RwE (Reichswerke Erfurt), RwE not accepted as manufacturer - it became "Tysk" (German) on the permit. After that one I bought an RwE rifle and to my surprise it said RwE on the permit. I then bought another RwE shotgun - just like the above one - and again RwE was accepted. Another shotgun of mine, a no name German, it says Belgian on the permit.

Topic of the thread: I put my pennies on it being an Italian as it carries Italian proofs but imported to and sold in Sweden by Vapen-Depoten.

Kind regards
Peter

Did they import good quality arms or does the quality vary? I am reminded of Charles Daly who has imported good quality arms as well as guns of poor quality.

Moose Snoot:

I'd say the animal is a Moose?

It looks like there is a moose in the circle and an engraved bear in front of the circle by an inch or two

How about a picture of the whole gun so we can fully appreciate a nice decent SXS?
