I'm considering purchasing a 1988 Remington 870 Magnum, "Special Purpose Mag" (SN#: W710349M) 12G, 26", oil-finish American Walnut stock/forend (non-gloss w/ recoil pad and swivel mounts) and I.C. choke.

The receiver has "Special Purpose Mag" stamped on it, not Express Magnum nor Super Magnum. This finish is a matte dark olive, as opposed to the matte black of an Express. This gun is in exceptionally good condition and appears nearly unused. The asking price is $289 (partially because it only has 1 of 3 original choke tubes).

Is this a fair price??

Should be a fair price. Chokes will run you about $20 or less. Be sure to check and see if the choke tubes are in straight. Remington is famous for crooked choke tubes and poor quality control in their newer guns.
