Hello everybody!

I am looking to buy my first pump action shotgun. So ,which gun should I go with: Remington870 or Mossberg 500/535?

Would like to hear from both Remington and Mossberg owners. What are pros and cons of these shotguns?

Thank you all.

I have a Remington 870, a Mossberg 500 and a Mossberg 835. Of the three, if i were keeping only one, I'd keep the Remington. I think the receiver on the Remington is a tad stronger and the overall gun just seems stronger (comparing like models, not the 870 to the 835).

That said, I really, really prefer the safety on the Mossbergs. I shoot mainly double guns and the Mossberg safety is more like the safety on those.

I like the win 870 personally. I think it is a little stronger also. But for most people both are very serviceable guns.

I have owned several of both - The Rem is built better - The Mossy has better safety and is usually a little more reliable - Both are great reliability wise, but I've had thousands of rounds through each model and have seen a few minor jams in the 870 and none ever in a Mossberg. The Mossbergs I've owned have always patterned very well. The only drawback for a Mossberg is the slide rattles so if you are a turkey stalker you need to be careful.

Even though the Rem is built better both guns will last longer than you will! Be careful of the "Box Store" Mossberg 12 gauge that sells for about $220 - Some of them have fixed chokes.

I would get the Mossberg. I have owned both and as others have said the safety is better on the mossberg and it is very reliable.

Both are good, but I prefer the Remington, as I am more used to a safety on the trigger guard.

Either gun is a good shotgun at an affordable entry level price. My advice is to handle both and see which one feels better to you. If you can shoot examples of each I would do so. Chose the one your more comfortable with.

Good shooting!

I also have owned both and would recomend the 500. Three 870's and all three jamed, about 6 500's and never had a jam.

I too have owned several of each and prefer the Remington's steel receiver over the Mossberg's aluminum. But I prefer the Mossberg's safety. What are you going to do? They're both great guns and either will suit any purpose. Go with the one that fits and points better for YOU, not what anyone else says.

Thanks. :) I think I'll go with the best of two worlds. Yesteday I made an order at my dealer. REM 870 synthetic and 18.5 inch barrel made by Mossberg for Remington shotguns. I hope that will make a good combo.
