Am looking for a balanced SXS in 16 ga, somewhat upscale, but not something that'll mortage my children's furture. Got a bunch of shoitguns A5s, Citori, Huglu, ithaca 37, 870s, Baikals- so not interested in those makes. Thought about these spansih made SxSs and would like any feedback on makes, suggestions, dealers ect.

Being frugal, would prefer to be at low end of cost, but I do value quality, so I'd limit my cost to anything under $3500

Opinions? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Given your parameters, if you are interested in sidelocks, the Ugartechea is the only one that will come in under $3500 and is probably the most bang for the money. If you can go a little more (say $4k), the Grulla 209 is probably the best option out there. As far as I know, the "entry level" Arrietta starts out around $3850, though they are really nice guns.

If you are looking at box locks, the AyA 4/53is a very nice piece for about $2800.

Are you looking for new or used? Lion Country handles Grulla and Ugartechea, I believe, in several grades. You can definitely get into a nice new Uggie for the dollar amount you stated. I've recently handled a beautifully balanced Grulla 209 16 ga but the pricetag of $5999 was too much...especially after checking online...I think the same gun can be had for about $2000 less. (Still at least $500 over your price.)

Are you looking for boxlock (somewhat less expensive) or sidelock (somewhat more expensive)?

If I get a chance I'll post a couple of websites where you can browse a bit to get an idea of what's out there new and used and relative prices.

If you can find a used Merkel (German gun), especially one with a double triggers, give it a good look, too. I don't think that Beretta's 471 comes in 16 ga, but could be wrong.

Good luck

Found the link for Cabela's gun library. Not saying they are the cheapest, or anything, but they do have an extensive inventory spread out over their many stores. AYA has it's own category, but check in the "European Guns" for Grullas, Ariettas, Merkels, etc.

This is the link to Lion Country:

Best wishes...have fun. I've been looking for either a 16 or 28 SxS for a couple of years...just haven't found the "perfect" one yet.

For what it is worth, I own one spanish made gun SXS and it has given me some problems that my gunsmith says is common in spanish made---metal issues. Soft metal he calls it. I don't know what to call it.

I agree with the other poster. Merkel.

Or an Italian or English of even US made. I highly recommend pre-owned. To my eye they are the most handsome and well made.

I think the Spanish made guns---in the price range you are talking----are some very attractive guns. I guess I just am a bit gun-shy now. Certainly the AYA's are fine pieces, and I can only relate the anti-spanish bias of ONE gunsmith and one SxS owner who gets broken firing pins regularly. Otherwise the guns you mentioned are terrific looking and handling... I cannot speak for reliability of those specific guns. But, I would say you ahev excellent taste!

 I agree about the AYA, I have a Matador III in 20 ga and I call it my pet. It's not fancy by any means, but boy is it balanced and gets the birds every time (of course depending on me! One day I'm going to get another spanish sxs more than likely a Ugartecha in 16ga!!! Good hunting and God Bless!!!
I would also like to hear some more comments on the Ugartecha especially in 16 ga from anyone. Again, Thanks!!!

I have an Uggie 16 ga, grade II. The only thing I have had done to it was to have a recoil pad put to get the LOP to 15&1/4".

I've shot skeet, quail and chukar with it, and except for a slump in my shooting, it has performed flawlessly. I dropped it last year and bagned up the the barrel, kept hunting and dropped two chukars.

My next gun will most likey be a higher grade AYA. Dollar for dollar I don't think you can go wrong with an Uggie.

I think these are all great guns for the money spent. The Uggie, which I have had is especially nice in its price point. Aya and Arietta will get you fancier wood and nicer metal....but as far as the shooting, they are all excellent. Budget and what feels best on your shoulder should be your final criteria.

What is the website for the Arrietta shotgun company?

Where are they made?

Who sells them in the US?

Arrietta doesn't have its' own website, per say. you can get a lot of information here Doublegunshop.

They are made in Eibar, Spain and are among the top tier of Spanish makers.

While I like Arrietas very much.
An AYA #2 is just as wonderful.
Ugartecheas are terrific for the money at under $2600 for a sidelock. Higher grade models are available
www.ugartechea.com

THEY ARE ALL TERRIFIC.

Roger.
