I am considering purchase of a Model 12 with a serial no. that puts it's mfg date in 1924.

It looks like a decent gun, but, I question whether the barrel is original.

The serial numbers on the barrel extension matches the reciever.

What I question is the Winchester marking on the barrel is in script rather than block letters,as it is on the earlier m12's that I already have.

Does anyone know when the barrel markings changed.

Thank you.

Hello sipi: A Md 12 of that vintage should have;

NICKEL STEEL WINCHESTER MODEL 12 12 GA.
TRADE MARK

Also on the right side should have all the pattent dates.

Not uncommon to find Md 12s with "newer barrels" after all they can be damaged. A Md 12 that has the wrong vintage barrel, cut the price in half! It's no longer original.

Through the life of a Md 12 the stampings changed. Can you tell us what the barrel is stamped? Also about the only changes from 1914-1924 were:
1st) Model 1912
2nd) Mod. 1912
3rd) Mod. 12
4th) MODEL 12

Get back to us.

Regards Dave

The barrel was marked "MODEL 12" and "NICKLE STEEL" which seems right but, the Winchester name on the barrel was in what seems to me to be an later style of lettering. than the "block" style letters that I have on my earlier guns.

Hi sipi: Well I had to go into the gun room and double check. I have 8 Nickel Steel guns. 5 made betweent 1912- 1922, and 3 made between 1924-1930.

The word WINCHESTER is larger on the 3 made between 1924-1929. Could this be what you see?

Regards Dave

Yes, the later Nickel Steel guns were marked with the Script lettering(Winchester Lightning Lettering).
