Has anyone had problems with flaking on the face of their firing pin(s) using cheddite primers?
I like the cheddites because of the price, but i shot a thousand of them in my cheap Baikal IZH-27 and the firing pin started flaking, and it started piercing the primers, i figured it was just my cheap gun. But another guy at the range who is shooting cheddites through a citori started having his firing pin face flake and pierce primers, he had to replace one of his pins, i started wondering, is the cup made out of harder metal, and damages the pin face, which in turn starts the piercing, or more likely, are the cups thinner, which causes an occasional piercing, and the resulting explosive compound starts the firing pin damage which in turn get s worse and worse?
Needless to say, i haven't used anymore cheddite's in any of my guns, and the problem(s) have gone away.

I've shot many thousands of them, never heard of such a thing! Up untill recently all the Estate shells were loaded with Cheddite primers too. Same for Challanger! Never heard of it!! I suppose now that I have heard of it all my shotguns will poop the roost on me??

I have put thousands through my Beretta 686 E without incident nor damage to the pins. Years ago my Win. 101 had a similar problem with the old type CCI's primers. I had 3 sets of pins put in that o/u befor I found out it was a bad set of heat treated pins and not related to primers.

I have since gone out and looked/inspected some of my fired Cheddite primers. Some are indeed a bit unusual. I've not done a serious inspection of my shotguns, just a look as closely as one can do with an O/U without taking it appart. It appears that maybe the nickel plateing on the primer cup is hard and has a tendency to crack/shatter during fireing rather than just conform to the fireing pin. There may even be a bit of carryover from shot to shot on the tip of the fireing pin? I'll look closer sometime soon!

Cheddite primers have a softer cup and do peirce and erode firing pins. There are many who have gotten away with using them for years, I will only assume it is due to their guns using weaker hammer springs.
