Went to the ISRA Range in Bonfield. Took my 45-70 along and did some long range sighting in. Guy came over and said .."Who owns the elephant gun?" I said that would be me.
We talked abit and he was saying if you want to try something intresting, shoot 410 shotshells and or slugs thru it. Claimed he does it all the time. I had personally never heard of such a thing. I know the 410 is based on the 45-70 case and it looks almost identical size wise. Anybody ever hear of it or better yet tried it?

yeah I've read about it

I guess you can shoot rattle snakes and stuff with bird shot or you could try and do clays but hahaha maybe only at 10 yards or something

It might do it, but it can't be to good for the rifling

That's what I was thinking. I wasn't worried about the shotshell. Figure a rifle cartridge makes a heck of a lot more pressure than a shotshell.

It would be close, the .45-70 is pressure tested at 13000 I think

"Little Sure Shot" did a lot of her shooting in exactly the same manner. The audience thought she was shooting a bullet instead of a shotshell.

Now I may be wrong but....

Annie Oakley and Bill Cody used a .410 type cartridge in their .44-40 pistols and rifles both.

The main reason was safety, as I am sure both could hit flying glass balls with a rifle or pistol with relative ease. I'm sure it did help a bit when firing from a galloping horse though.

Actually, the SAAMI spec for 45-70 rifles is 28,000 CUP.

From what I've read, most people limit the old trapdoors to 21,000 CUP. That's a lot higher than a .410.

Apparently the .410 has similar dimensions as the .45 colt,
Thompson Center Has/Had a .45 Colt/.410 bbl.
The dimensions for the .45 Colt:

.45-70:

It appears the headspace may be a bit more than needed,
but i don't see why it wouldn't work.
Although i think you'd want to use the 2.5"
not a 3",
the 3" would be opening up in the throat and bore itself, which probably would increase pressures, might even shoot off a tube, i don't know.
Even the 2.5" .410 is gonna be opening up in the throat and bore a little.

I know the old timers shot 410 shells in the old trap doors, I don't know how well it worked. But I have tried it in a TC Contender chambered for 45/70. It works, but the extractor will slip past the rim of the 410 shell, and I always ended up digging them out with a pocketknife. It is not a problem, just kinda slow for repeat shots. I don't know if the old trap door had the same problem or not.

You most certainly will get some pretty dismal patterns shooting a shotshell in a rifled barrel. Might be fine "real" close, but the 1/2 oz loads are not even all that forgiving in a smooth bore, much less a rifled bore that is going to spin the shot. For laughs, I fired some shot loads out of my rifled 12 guage once. The patterns really wern't patterns at all, the center had few hits, but there was clumps of shot that corresponded to the groves on the outside of the pattern. Personal opinion, waste of time and shells.

I tried and it is basically all bad info with .410 into a 45-70. I have a guide gun and also.410....here is a picture of the difference..you need a knife to pry out and it does not fit well at all. Flush on one side.

If the base did fit, it sure wouldn't hurt the rifling any. Nothing but plastic touches the bore when shooting shot shells.

I see no advantage shooting slugs as that would be the same as a bullet, but much slower. Shooting shot also won't do you much good because of the rifling. That would cause the wad to spin and the spin would throw a much wider pattern. Probably have an effective range of about 7 yards.

When I was a kid, my neighbor had a little single shot that used .410 shells. I always thought it was a .410. He let me use it one time and I looked it over. It was a .44 Cal single shot but chambered a .410 pretty good. The bore was wore smooth so whoever started using it as a .410 must have shot a lot of loads through it. All of the male members of that family have passed. I think I'll ask one of the girls what ever happened to it.

They use to sell guns chambered 44/410. One of them had a straight rifled choke to stop the shot from spinning before it left the barrel. Another was smooth and used a rifled choke to spin the pistol bullets. I haven't seen one advertised in the last 30 years though, if that tell you anything. :)
