I recently aquired an old shotgun from grandads old shotgun supply (closet full) more/less was wondering what theres a release like a pump shotgun behind the trigger guard but I can't figure out what it does? with it cocked or safety on or off any ideas? this model locks into place with a crosslock on the bolt side but i cant figure out what i really does anyone have a idea or know where I can get a book or something on this model

The Model 124 was a straight pull, 3 shot bolt action, made 1949 to 1955, not a very successful model. the button is probably to lock the bolt back.. I've seen a few around, over the years, but I know little about them.. Bushrod

Mill,
The lever is a release for cross bolt ,so you can unload gun if not fired. if you fire the shotgun you can cycle bolt for next round.I do not have much info on this shotgun. Does yor gun have plastic stock and forearm.

the stock is tenite in pretty good shape i'll take gun apart shortly
But, I take it wasn't a very popular model during that time
