Kaib, the perfect time to install and fit a pad is when you are building or in your case reshaping a stock. Fit the pad installed on the stock and you can get a perfect fit, something you can not get with the pad off.

When finishing, put on a layer of blue painters tape on the pad at the butt end of the plastic base and begin your finishing. If you finish and wet sand without that, you will roll the edge of the pad and have a gap. After the finish is done, remove the pad and use Hoppes to remove the finish then reinstall.

Well, i am not really sure, however i think this should work out actually. As someone said above, the RO sander is just a bit slower compared to a belt sander, however it should do the job. Surely, a proper sander would do the job better and easier, however i think this is also a great solution for this ''issue''. Actually, i been thinking about doing the same thing recently. However i don't have a slander at all. I am looking for a slander allowing it to to glide easily over most surfaces, https://www.bestorbitalsander.com/. I found some great choices on this site, i guess i will choose one of those.
