I have a 60 yr old Ithaca 37 12g with what a worn extractor. But I'm looking at the bolt and just not seeing how to get the top extractor out. Can anybody give me a hint or two?

Thanks

It's hook shaped (180 degrees sort of) and you need to push it back towards the body of the bolt so the bottom (inside) of the hook will disengage. Look up the manual for the 37 and it should show you exactly how to do it. Watch out for the spring and follower, they like to get away when you do this.

Is the extractor really worn that much? Or does it look worn?

The top "extractor" is actually a holder, it hold the shell rim against the bottom extractor
that does all the work. If the top extractor actually had a sharp hook like the bottom
the fired shell would never come out!
Actually some of the first year Model 37's did not have a top extractor.

Also please note the Remington 870 functions just fine with only one extractor.

Thanks guys. Life got in the way of my hobbies there for a couple days.

Jaguar - I guess that makes sense - nowhere for the shell to go there. Compared to a newer 37 I have, it looks a little more rounded, but it doesn't look broken.

The bottom extractor looks good, but I've twice now had shells fail to extract - rack the slide and the shell stays in the barrel. which is awkward because I end up with the next shell on the lifter with no where to go. But if I pop the barrel off the spent hull falls right out.

There really aren't that many parts here - what am I missing?

Check the barrel alignment. The cutouts for the extractors in the barrel have to line up with the cutouts in the receiver and the extractors themselves in the bolt.
Loosen the mag end nut slightly so the barrel can be wiggled easily, invert the gun & retract the bolt about an inch or so then you can see how the cutouts and the bolt have to all be aligned. Get everything straight and tighten mag nut. Also check yoke at the end of the mag tube for alignment too.

What kind of shell? A lot of Ithacas don't like Euro type shells.

Those should be fine. As was said extractor notches are critical.

I have just this minute posted exactly the same problem--overlooked this thread in my haste. So, what was the answer, Original Poster? And others: how difficult is it to replace the top and bottom extractor springs? They're available, cheap; but can I replace them myself? Is there a video?
