Hello, haven't posted in quite a while. I have a 20ga H&R Greenwing Special, USA Made that seems to only fire about 70% of the time. Some times pulling the hammer back and trying again works but with some shells it just won't fire. It is not a very useful gin if it doesn't go BANG when it is suppose to. Especially for teaching my kids.

I am thinking either the lock up isn't quite right or there is an issue with the firing pin or firing pin spring. Let me know if you have experience with this on a single shot?

Does anyone know if any disassembly guides online?

.

AFAIK, only exploded parts diagrams are available, but not disassembly guides.

However, there are a few YouTube videos on the subject that may help you:

IIRC, those guns have the rebounding hammer safety; and if so, the rebound portion of the mainspring strut may be a tad too long, which impedes a full hammer strike.

The fix is to remove the MS and slightly shorten the rebound portion.

Just remember to use baby steps, shortening/trying until reliable ignition is achieved.

Whatever, rebound or no rebound, unreliable ignition usually results from the hammer being impeded from making a strong/full fall onto the firing pin - so you might also want to look at things like no lube (or grit) on the hammer pivot, rub marks on the side(s) of the hammer, etc, etc.

Reloads or factory ammo?
If factory, did you try more than one brand?

rybu0305,

Sorry for the late response. The Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly Part V: Shotguns 2nd edition, pages 138 through 144 has illustrated disassembly instructions for the H&R Topper, H&R Model 490 Greenwing and several other models built on the same action.
