I know that there are 2-4 day courses teaching the basics of smithing certain popular pistol types like Glocks and 1911s. Nothing really complicated, just complete disassembly and reassembly, deep cleaning, replacement of broken parts, etc. Is there such a thing for shotguns, say a few day Browning workshop or one for Beretta? When I Google the subject, all I can find are gunsmithing schools either in person or online for career development. That isn’t what I am after. I thought maybe the NSSA/NSCA center in San Antonio might offer something, but so far I haven ‘t found it.

What say you?

No, not the way you are describing it. Beretta and Browning are completely different lines. Basic "disassembly and reassembly, deep cleaning, replacement of broken parts" is covered in several places, including the owners manuals and field service manuals, and on YouTube (Ask Larry series).

Randy, do you have a LINK to the "YouTube (Ask Larry series)."?

A Google search turned up a number of Ask Larry videos, none of which seemed to have anything to do with guns. There seems to be more than a few Larrys under Ask Larry???

Thanks

Sure, I have seen a lot of that. But I was hoping to find a short course with hands on my own gun and oversight by an instructor. Like I said, that kind of thing is done for pistols. I just thought maybe it was done for shotguns too.

Look up the NRA summer gunsmithing classes that are done at some of the junior colleges that have the two year gunsmithing associate degree programs. Depending on where you are located, Lassen, Trinidad, Murray state and others offer these week long classes. Probably all cancelled this year due to pandemic, but should be on for next year. I've attended several, including the Double Gun Gunsmithing course taught by the late Jack Rowe down in Tishomingo, OK. Jack was a little stove up by that time of his career, but we all shamelessly tried to get him talking about the post WW-II London gun trade and all the greats he knew. It is a great program of week long classes with meal and dorm lodging available.

Anything is available if you are willing to travel and pay enough for it. Any good good gunsmith can do it for you, if you are willing to pay the shop rate. It isn't a wonderful year for either travel or up close and personal anything.

Thanks. That is a good lead.

I don't know anything about courses but there have been a number of books written on shotgun gunsmithing. Some are likely out of print but I have found the NRA Gunsmithing Guide (not sure if that is the exact title), to be helpful. Ralph Walker, an Alabama gunsmith wrote a book titled, "Shotgun Gunsmithing". I don't think it is still in print. The information is somewhat dated but yet still good & relevant.
