I am shooting 5 round stages with a friend at the trap range.
The 870 has an extended magazine, and I load 5 at a time.
This is entirely for practice when the zombie apocalypse comes.

After the 3rd stage (15th shell), I get a jam that will not eject the last spent shell.
The second time this happened today, it was on the 24th shell.

When the 870 cools down 10 minutes or so, the jam clears itself and I can eject the shell.
I am puzzled...

Ammo is Winchester Super-X, 12-ga Heavy Game Load, 2 3/4", 1255 fps, 1 1/8 oz of #7 1/2"

The 870 is 1982 vintage, less than 500 rounds since new.

your loads are probably steel base hulls and are expanding along with your gun try brass base hulls like AAs or STS hulls.

Thanks for all the replies.

I normally shoot STS or AA, but have a few cases of the Winchester high base steel to be rid of.
The observations above seem to be right on the money.

I have a precision shell gauge, but it didn't occur to me to use it.
I will check all three boxes for next week with the gauge.

Polishing the chamber is definitely on my to-do list.

Thanks again.

I have isolated it down a bit further.

The failure is confined to Winchester Super-X Heavy Game Load, 1255 fps, 1 1/8 oz, #7.5.
I tested each fresh shell in my gauge, all are uniform in the gauge, none are tight.

The jam occurs at #4 or #5 of a group of five, shot rapidly.
When things cool down, I can eject the spent shell.

The steel base of the jammed shell has expanded, and will not longer fit in my gauge without forcing
it.

As a test, I shot a box of 25 STS, not one single problem.
The peculiar parts... the Winchesters that jam in the 870 are 100% OK in my V3.

I will take the advice above and polish my chambers.
Thanks for the tips.

Glad this is working out for you.

My first thought was a different direction, but that is more my awareness of design elements rather than experience.

My question: does your 870 have the flex-tab system installed?

I heard '870 jamming' and thought of this. It seems to have been designed and applied to the non-police 870s around mid 1980s, so I don't know if yours would have it or not. Police 870s had it earlier- for their version of zombie apocalypse.

However, it seems like you are on the right path.

I don't if this is present or not.
Mfg date is April, 1982.

Apparently my 870 does not like these Win Super-X loads.
The amusing part: they shoot flawlessly in my V3 and my SxS.
Fully agree: need to polish my chambers.

If you know this- save the ammo for the others.

The flex-tab is more about jamming on the loading cycle.

Here is a link to help you figure out if you have it:

Good luck!
