Browning A 5 old model is not loading second round. Fires and ejects but does not load next round. You can hand cycle and it will load. Any suggestions. I have cleaned completely and checked all springs all things appear to be fine. Also adjusted rings for light or heavy loads and have the same problem. Recoil spring does not appear to be too heavy, works just others.

So it hand cycles FROM the magazine ok?
Was wondering if you'd had the cut-off lever engaged

You probably need stouter ammunition. Make sure the friction pieces are set up for target loads and you have a few drops of motor oil on the mag tube.
There even was one incident where the gun would do that on the very last round. When he’d load five it would fire four, load three fire two. The last shell always stayed in the magazine. The magazine spring was weak. That’s one spring most people don’t think about.

He says it works when he hand cycles the action, so it’s unlikely to be the carrier latch.

No issues with the action spring assembly to the rear of the receiver?
Is the problem with all types/brands of shell, or just one make?
No issues with the chamber area, burrs or something that the fired case is catching on?

. IME, the solution depend upon what ammunition you're using - since long-recoil autoloaders can be adjusted for using different power/load levels of ammo. For example, if your A-5's friction ring (on the magazine tube) is set for heavy loads, and you're using low-powered loads, the action may not cycle properly when fired, but be OK when manually cycled.

I’m glad you posted that diagram. I shoot trap with full choke, 1 oz at around 1200. I have the rings set for light loads, should it be set for heavy ? Why the distinction between full chokes and other when setting the rings ? I thought it was just dependent on the load.

.
To avoid the chance of battering the receiver or cracking the forend wood, I would suggest setting it for heavy loads first; then if your loads don't cycle the action properly, go back to the low-power setting.

I HATE that diagram. It’s from Remington, and I don’t know who thought it was a good idea, if you have a Cutts Compensator on your gun, to set the friction pieces up that way. Browning says never shoot your Auto-5 without the Bronze Friction Piece in place, and putting it next to the receiver is the same as leaving it off. I have two Auto-5’s with a Cutts, and several with Poly Chokes. They make no difference whatsoever. Browning has a similar diagram, without the disastrous Cutts reference.

Then, how about you post what you regard as the correct system diagram ?

Would the springs make any indifference to the settings ? Isn’t the action spring different with the Remington ?
Sorry to derail the thread.

I believe the Remington’s Action Spring is identical to Browning’s. And I think Recoil Springs are interchangeable as well. The Field Service Manual lists the lengths of the various springs, which I will post shortly. I used to change out Recoil Springs, but found it unnecessary for target loads. In fact, one gun became so unreliable that it’s now a dedicated bowling pin and home defense shotgun. It cycles buckshot just fine.
