Does that mean steel?

No. It is nickel-plated brass.

No. It is nickel-plated brass.

For how long?

So what does the extra expense of nickel-plating add?

If lowering the percentage of antimony like most shell manufactures have done to help their
bottom-line , inwhich gives you LESS bb's in the payload , as antimony is very costly , I wonder
how many more bb's are gained from adding 8 % antimony ? This makes me wonder , if the
true ability for long-range shooting is in pattern density and not in pellet energy ?
What do you think Randy ?

"So what does this do to the density? Pure lead has a density of .41 pounds per cubic inch. Six percent antimonial lead has a density of .393 pounds per cubic inch, which is a loss of .0028 per percentage point of antimony."

It isn't much of a change in density from the 5-6% range, just a few more pellets. They are good-looking shells, as far as I know they haven't been made yet in production quantities, and folks have generally purchased inexpensive shells anyway. Remington sells far more Gun Clubs (2% antimony) than they do American Clay & Field (4%) or STS loads (6%).

I don't think ammo companies lower antimony levels so much to help their bottom line as to just remain competitive and stay in business.

Both copper and nickel plating aid the "lubricity" of the shot, which allows the shot to pass more easily through the chokes without being deformed, and thus produces better patterns. The technical term is a "lower coefficient of friction".

This is NOT a new concept, and has been around for at least 70 years. But good, hard high-antimony shot is also required underneath the plating, which Winchester has apparently done with the new load.

And 'electroplated" copper or nickel is far superior to "mechanical" methods of so-called "plating" of shot.

That's one theory. The problem is, no one has been able to show it on the pattern board. As shot doesn't directly contact the forcing cone, barrel, or choke with one-piece shot cups, the benefit is dubious. It is shot that deforms shot, little else.

Yep I agree , the marketing people are at it again !
Taller brass , that's gotta be better ? A better wad maybe more so !
With .035/.040 what more does a guy need for long-range , besides more pellets ?

It is good marketing. Just look at all the threads commenting about AA Diamond Grade . . . and it isn't so much as loaded yet for consumers.

And look at what you created Randy , you certainly earn your oats on this one ?
With Zach being "home-grown" I would have many more questions about Long-range !

Zach didn’t appear to be ready for the interview, if you ask me. I’m sure he’s a hell of a shooter!

My thoughts, high brass is the devil on the machines like the PW and Spolar for target loads. It just causes more needed pressure to insert the hull in the sizer instead.

Fact is, on the PW, if you are reloading high brass hulls in 12 gauge, then you really want the 950 tool set instead. The reason for this, the lower sizer is just a ring, and the top tool head is doing all the sizing instead (so your not wearing out your arm on the hull insertions into the sizers).

950 sizer on the right,

And 950 depriming tool with its sizer as part of the upper tool.

Nickel plating on brass heads is fine. It is thin enough (normally less than 0.0001" if electroplated) so it doesn't really do anything to the amount of force required in sizing when you are reloading. Nickel plating on brass shell head is only done for cosmetic purposes.

It's NOT a big deal and nothing to be concerned about.
