I recently acquired a canister of Win 452 powder in great condition and have found recipes that I would like to try. I understand that it is the same powder as the old Hodgdon Trap 100. Is this correct?

My memory may have deceived me again, but I thought the early cans of WST also had "452AA" on them. But the only can of WST that I have left does not.

452AA and WST load almost exactly the same. I loaded several kegs of 452AA in the 70's when learning trap. Was a wonderful powder. Have since loaded several kegs of WST, and have been happy using the target load that I had for 452AA. I too remember that Winchester provided tech advice saying the two were "very close" to the same formulation and load data.

But .... no info about if 452AA was also equivalent to Trap 100. Since there is a ton of current loading data for WST, though, I kinda wonder why a Trap 100 comparison would even be "need to know". (I always try to use the most modern data available - and WST data is current)

Good luck, GJ

Just curious mainly. Also the old Hodgdon reloading guides have a lot of data on Trap 100, but basically nothing in W452

From looking in Lyman 2nd edition, I'd suggest that Trap 100 was close to 452AA, but not the same.

For example, two pretty comparable loads between the powders in ounce-and-eighth target loads for the Rem RXP case, Trap 100 seems to need a little more powder weight than a comparable 452AA load.

Example:
21 grains Trap 100, Win 209 primer, WAA12 wad, making 1185 FPS
20.5 grains 452AA, Win 209 primer, WAA12 wad, making 1200 FPS

That comparison really shows 452AA being a more powerful-per-grain powder than Trap 100, if the two loads were accurately tested and reported by Lyman. They are close enough to show simliar behavior, but I don't see proof they are the same powder relabeled.

Good luck, garrisonjoe

Yes Sir! Your understanding is correct!

No shortage of 452AA recipes. Why take a chance.
Win AA CF hull, Win209, 19.5 452AA, AA12 wad, 1 1/8 ounce of shot.
I have been loading this for about 40 years.

452AA was the only powder I used for 12GA normal speed target loads when I bought my first reloader, a Grabber, back in 1984. And you could buy it in 16 lb containers.
