How fast do you like yours?

1200 fps

An honest 3/4oz of #9's at 1200 fps

3/4oz 1200fps, had to do a little work on the 3/4oz shot bushing to get it.

I load all my 28’s at 1300-1330 FPS just change the shot size.

A consideration should be how fast are your other gauges ? try to keep them uniform.

I load my 28 gauge skeet loads to around 1250 so I don't have to change a bushing when I want to starting loading for sporting clays. I do the same thing for 12 and 20 gauges. I load all to around 1250 for all shooting sports. I try to load the 410 to 1300fps.

I agree with DEG's post - 1250 fps seems to be good for all clay sports with a 28 ga. and you don't have to keep shells separated by speed (or clays game).

Another vote for 1200fps----whether faster or slower keep all gauges the same speed for a consistent lead.

As I move up in gauges, the smaller bores pattern better going faster. My 12 ga 1oz are loaded to 1150, 20 ga to 1200, 28 gauge 1250-1275, and 410 run around 1300-1350.

If you crono factory 28 and 410’s from Winchester, you will find they run about these velocity. As far as patterns at 20 yards, I see more uniform densities. Running 1200 FPS., I find dense centers, with lighter fringes. Everyone’s tubes may run a little different, so it’s best to put them on paper

in 28, my loads are about 1210fps.

Hence take the time to first Patten board the ammo to see what is producing, then adjust the speed to get the best pattern. If the pattern is hot spot centering, then increasing the speed will clean up the hot spot centering. If the center of pattern is full of holes with more of the pattern at the working perimeter , then slow down to the speed isntead. Hence different powders and differ wads, will effect how the shell patterns in given shotguns.

And yes, this is after you have the correct choke restriction to give you the over all diameter of the patter at the distance you will shooting.

I took my new Browning 28 ga out yesterday for a round of skeet (first time) and used a factory box of 1300 fps #8 1/2 that I had on hand. I shot a 24 and those shells broke the clay with gusto. I may rethink the 1200 as my go to load.
