I'm following a recipe from the Lyman 5th edition : Fiocchi hull, w209, 14.5 gr Longshot, sub Claybuster 1034 pink for wAA28, 3/4 oz, 1215 fps, 8500 psi. Many punkie loads and unburned powder. I'm guessing the problem is the wad. Anybody have a reliable load using this hull with W209 ( primers are tough to be ).

Or a cocked wad.

Claybuster 1034 pink is for the older taper CF hulls and when used in HS hull loads will have problem with blow by past the wad.
So stating that, and that will bank that the Fiocchi hulls are straight wall, would be better off with the Red HS wad (CB5034-28HS), if not something wider in OD.

Steve +1 BPI has a Fio 28 gauge wad on sale right now if you verify the wad isn't cocked and you still have issues.

Yep, loose tapered-hull wad in a straight-wall hull or a cocked wad, it's wad leakage, AND 8,500psi and a slow-burning powder ISN'T HELPING matters any.

Wrong wad for that hull. Also your powder charge sounds a bit light. Check the Hodgdon Data site.
I would substitute the Win 28AAHS wad, or the Claybuster 5034 clone of said Winchester.

Thanks, guys. I was surprised that the pink CB isn't working until you pointed out it was for the CF hull. I was assuming it was for straight walled hulls. I have the red 5034 and will try it. Again, thanks.

If the 5034 won't work, I'll order the Fiocchi wads. I don't think I'm getting cocked wads but with an inappropriate wad it could certainly happen.

If using a M.E.C., check wad guide for broken fingers. Broken wad guide fingers are about the only way to consistently cock your wads.

Also, the Fiocchi hulls are loaded with euro primers (.001" larger in OD than Win 209 primer), so may be better of with either Noble sport or Chedite primers that are the correct OD to begin with for the hulls primer pockets.
Hence keep your eyes on the spent primers after being reloaded/fired with the correct wad, and if your getting signs of primer leakage in the hulls with the Win 209 primers, then to go to the larger OD euro primers for the better primer to primer channel seal.

Cheddite wont do it. Everything I've bought from Cabela's are graphs or Powder Valley measure the same as a Winchester 209, and r actually a little easier to press in with your thumb than a Winchester 209. 4 Euro sizing you'll need Noble sport, fiocchi 616, or Rio. Be aware that BPI is now supplying 3 inch hulls with a magnum fiocchi primer of which there is zero data that I have ever seen in my life, and it is not a standard fiio 616 primer, so I'd be cautious and very sure if purchasing fiocchi exactly what I was getting.
