I heard that when choosing the best wad for the application it was best to match the wad with the hull color. What do you think?

Ha! Ha!, I'll drink to that! Whatever works, if that makes things better for you, go for it. Personally, I have not found hull color to have much effect on patterns or ballistics. Imagine the tragedy! You spend hours & hours developing the perfect load for application "X" & out of the blue. for no reason they change the &%#$ wad color!!!

There's too much fussing about loading this recipe for trap, that recipe for skeet, another recipe for sporting clays, etc. Just pick your favorite color hull, matching wad, and load whatever recipe you can find for this combination. Voila! Now just concentrate on the clay...see the rings...don't look at the barrel, etc, etc, etc. LOL, Ed

That’s only half the story. To be truly efficient you must also match powder color. Red Dot with Winchester’s, Green Dot with Remingtons and Blue Dot In Peters. Why else would they be color coded?

The very least I do before I take any load in the field is check & see what pattern it throws in the gun I am going to shoot it in if I haven't done so already. Different loads can pattern very differently in different guns of the same choke designation. Lead bird loads usually don't show many surprises & when it does it is usually just a degree of choke thing. Non toxic, buffered or buckshot loads can & do ruin hunting trips if there is something wrong with your loads. It isn't usually so bad it destroys the hunt but it can make it less enjoyable. Tweaking the load for the best performance can get you a little more efficiency.

Now you're talking. I can take it to the next level.

When I happened to put the blue DRXL118 wad in the Peters hull I thought "that's pretty cool". I bet I can have some fun with this and decided to make up the picture. I haven't loaded any of those red Win. wads in about 10 years--and actually in red AA-CF with either 1-3/8 or 1-1/2 oz. That's way too much punishment these days in my 7lb Win. 101 pheasant gun. Now just 1-1/4 oz.

Hope you got a chuckle.
Tom

Man, this thread explains a lot.
Green hulls, pink wads, shoot like dodo.
Red hulls, red wads, shoot well.
Now I know
