I have a couple thousand of the pre-STS green box Remington 209 primers that I dug out of storage intending to use them in place of my preferred W209's. I am pretty sure that the non-STS Remington primers are milder than the W209's but I thought that since folks here have been so kind with my other two primer substitution questions I might as well press my luck and ask about these also. I promise that this is my last inquiry on primer strength/compatibility.

My load is"

Remington 12 ga. Gun Club hull
17 grs. of 700X powder
CB175-12 wad
3/4oz. of #9 shot
W209 primer

they didn't have as high of a brisance and 'generally' used a titch [a titch being up to 1/2 gr more]more powder to equal the velocity of the Winchester primers.

The lightest load I could find using 700-X with the Fed. 209 primer was 1 oz.(not many people shot 3/4 oz. back then), you are on the right track, with the 1 oz. loads they start at 16 grains and go as high as 17.5 grains to get around 1200 FPS, Good Luck !!!!

If the boxes are marked something like, Remington 209 Premier (209P), they are very close to the current Remington 209 Premier STS (209 PSTS).

I wouldn't give it a second thought, just make the swap and be done with it.

FWIW if those are the Remington 209P, they weren't known for their consistency.
