Out of the following powders which is easiest on hulls?
Longshot
WSF
Herco
Unique
Missed out on a 8 pd of clays. I have 1 pd of international clays for 28ga. Wanting to load 3/4 oz loads. I have once fired HS AA hulls. And fiocchi hulls. I did find some green dot. Only seen 2 loads for it in 28ga in my Lyman book.

I don't really know because there are lots of variables. But, for 3/4oz loads at 1,200 fps, if I had to guess I would say Herco because it is the slowest burn "speed" of the powders you mention. Still just a guess.

By the way, the abbreviation for pound is lb. , pounds is lbs..
Took me a minute to understand what you were saying.

I'm trying to understand the references to Clays and International and connect them to the 28 ga. focus of the thread.

I've used every powder you ask about at one time or another. These are what I think of them.

Lyman lists WSF for the 28 ga but Winchester discontinued the use of WSF in the 28 ga back in the late 1990s if I remember correctly. This was due to erratic high pressure spikes when used in the 28 ga. This was a disappointment for me as I had been using it for a while.

Clays is much too fast of burning to be used in the 28 ga with International having a very, very limited application in this bore. Clays is best suited for the 12 ga and International for the 12, 16, and some 20 ga loads. In this line of powders, Universal is the one to use.

Green Dot is another quick burning powder that has an extremely limited application in the 28 ga. It too, is better suited to the 12 ga.

Of the remaining, I would pick Unique followed by Herco, then Longshot. The reasons are Unique and Herco gave off no odd sounding reports when using 28 ga Chambermates in a 12 ga while Longshot had numerous ones. I didn't run any over a chronograph but based on scores and perceived leads the Unique and Herco loads appeared to be in the ballpark to my 12 ga loads while the Longshot loads were much slower. One could regularly see the shot swarm with the latter load too. Out of a 28 ga gun or the 20 ga using 28 ga Chambermates Longshot worked fine.

My current favorite powder for the 28 ga is Hodgdon HS-6; mainly because I have several pounds of it, it meters well, and the load fits the hulls well. When this powder is used up, Universal or maybe Unique (depending on my supply at that time) will be next on the list.

I have a preference for Longshot for my 3/4 oz. 28 ga. AA-HS shells, loaded to about 1250 fps for sporting clays.

IMPORTANT: Hodgdon Clays is NOT a suitable powder for 28 ga. reloads!

currently using Unique . On 10th loading starting to get burn throughs.
Most of the shells can be loaded again and will. Problem with Unique is
you can not get 13gr in the short HS hulls. Had to drop charge to 12.3gr
instead of 13. But I still get 1200fps with the lower charge. would like to
try 20/28 but it has (in my area) always been unavailable. I tried Longshot
and HS-6 but came back to Unique.

You did not mention 20/28, but that is my go to powder for the 20 and the 28.

Another vote for Hodgdon Longshot.

I am using Universal clays in my 28 ga. I was looking for 20/28 powder no luck. I can find the other powders I listed. My layman's book as several of the wsf loads in it. That's why I was asking. Plus I have the small bore data book . It also has wsf in it. I just started loading 20ga. I got my hands on several cans of international clays. Does anyone offer a updated shotgun reloading handbook? I am going to use the load for hunting. My first post should have been universal clays. Not international sorry about that. Rich.

Hi,

I use Longshot also, mostly because it's always available locally. Even back when we had the "Great Powder Shortage". It fits well and I have not had any off sounding reports in my loads.

I use 13.2 grains of Longshot and it works very well even in 28 ga. FITASC.

For 3/4 oz 28 gauge, GD has been a powder that has repeatedly proven itself to me for average 1,200 fps loads. It is very economical at 12-12.5 grains and burns super clean in the 28 gauge. As ugly dog said, it may have limited application, but if all you want are target velocity, IMO you are missing out if you don't give GD a try.

Many Ks of loads and broken targets say it works beautifully and was my go to powder. Some of the tube shooters don't like it due to pressures and their concern with tubes splitting. I did not use it in a tube equipped gun so never had any issues.

I don't have any empirically based data to quote but logically since you use less GD than the any of the others you list, and it burns relatively quick; I would think it would be great for long hull life. In other words, it seems logical that there would be less tendency to char the hull crimp area with such low quantity and quicker burning tendencies.

Try it-I bet you like it. Good luck!

Unique is the classic powder for 28 gauge, and 13 grains is pretty much the standard charge. It is also the easiest on hulls in my experience. However, I've also used HS-6/540 to duplicate factory loadings (as outlined in the old Winchester data books) in the old CF AA hulls. It meters well. I have tried Herco but didn't find it any better than Unique or 540. Lately I have been using Green Dot under 5/8 oz shot. Very economical. The SG-28 wad is best used in this load.

I came across WSF 4 pd ked for 135.00. I bought it. If the pressure is too high for 28ga. I can always use it in my 20ga. My Lyman manual shows the data for it.

WSF 15.5 grs
Win 209
Fiocchi hull 3/4 oz waa28.
1235 fps. psi 9,400.

I have a bunch of Fiocchi hulls. Mostly the 28ga hulls I have are Fiocchi. Plus I bought some more too. I can find Fiocchi primers. So I started using Fiocchi hulls.
