Post subject: Light 20ga 3/4 oz load suggests?
PostPosted: Wed Sep 24, 2003 1:07 pm
I would like to work up a nice light 3/4 oz load for skeet and some clays. I have a daughter that is about ready to be introduced into shotgunning and I think something light would be best. Another reason is that I have an old Fox Sterlingworth in 20 gauge that deserves the light loads too.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

B and P has a nice 7/8oz load at 1160FPS it's called the Allodola. I know you can buy direct from B&P but I think it's in cases http://www.bandpamerica.com

Double check the data, 'cause I'm old, my memory's bad, and it's been a few years since I tried it, but here goes:

Win AA hull, Win 209 Primer, WinAA20 wad (I used Claybuster's clone), I think 12 to 12.5 grains of Hodgdon International Clays, and a couple 28 ga cards (you'll have to monkey around to find the right height to get a good crimp), and 3/4 oz of your finest #8-1/2 shot. Great loads, but a pain in the you-know-what to load (the 28 ga cards were the pain). I finally said "Screw this..." and went back to 7/8 oz with 14.3 gr of International - no more cards.

I think if you just look for the lowest velocity 7/8 oz load you can find, you'd get about the same recoil.

I am loading 11/16 oz of 8s and mec #23 bushing with imr 7625 for real nice skeet load in o/u. The 11/16 bar is for 3 inch .410 by the way.

wwb says:

"Win AA hull, Win 209 Primer, WinAA20 wad (I used Claybuster's clone), I think 12 to 12.5 grains of Hodgdon International Clays, and a couple 28 ga cards"

I am certainly no expert but the mgr of the range that I go to has the same requirements for a 3/4 load and the story is that he also used to use the 20 gauge cards with AA Wads AND Claybuster 20's. Seems that Winchester has recently redesigned (actually went BACK to the old design) the WAA20 so that the shot cup is just a tad smaller, therefore eliminating the need for the card thing. If you take a close look at the Claybuster vs. the WAA, you can see this minor difference. His recipe is similar to the above provided by wwb.

Win AA Hull (Remington recipe identical, btw), Win 209, WAA Wad, Hodgdon 12.1 grains (he has an adjustable charge bar and uses exactly 12-see Hodgdon book-12.3 is the closest MEC bushing) with 3/4 oz #9's (which he uses for Skeet).

Straight from Hodgdon:

3/4 oz. Internat'l Rem. 209P WAA20 12.1 gr / 9,000 PSI 1150 fps OR 13.2 gr / 10,500 PSI 1200 fps

I figure that 12.3 is certainly "close enough"

Good Luck,
Todd
