It's interesting to see the varied opinions on WD-40.
I (and others) have drawn the conclusion that the reason for the "varied opinions" is because people are having trouble keeping "context" in scope. Cleaner, water remover, or protectant...
Even in this very thread we see "oil tanks", metal strips in saltwater, yada, yada, yada... A guy who sets out to find the most effective/efficient, and cheapest shotgun bore cleaner doesn't give a hoot about salt tanks, oil strips, or what not.
If you consider the discusions, and opinions in terms of a "shotgun bore <i><b>cleaner</i></b>", you see a trend (as a poster described above with the white glove/white patch test). If you consider the conversation/discussion in terms of "protection", for this, that, and the other, and not limited to long term heavy industrial oil tanks, or light temporary/intermediate protection/moisture barrier, you suddenly get a "varried" discussion, much like the vastly "varried" protection requirements.
I, as most, am in the camp of discovering it as the most effective/efficent shotgun bore cleaner, and intermeadiate lube/moisture barrier between shootings (days to weeks).
As far as WD-40 and "wood" goes, the same situation applies to *any* oil, be it CLP, Silicone spray, RemOil, 10W30, and 3-in-1, so this should drop of the equation, and discussion completly.
