Hi all,
My kids are all in Greenville, and I'm a grouse/woodcock hunter from Pa.
I see SC has a grouse season, and the north/west section maybe holds some birds.
Anyone experience any grouse or woodcock over bird dogs your way?
I'll be visiting next week and plan to do some exploring.
thanks,
Terry

Terry--
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Greenville and surrounding are great recreational/cultural areas, but the bird hunting ain't, 'cepting for mourning dove--which late season is closed until Dec. 21.
I'm an old ruffed/wc hunter from SW Va--first thing I did moving here was to call the USFS Ranger District, rural mail delivery, and SC DNR for Grouse/WC opportunities---"Haven't seen any grouse in past 7 years...etc."

Pickens/Oconee counties, Chattooga Wilderness, Jocassee Gorges, Back Creek 'look' like grouse country, but they are at best apparently on the very southernmost fringe of the the species' range.

Below I've posted some best bets in WMA potentials in the Upstate--now, WC when they're coming thru are more available in the LowCountry, but it's a 3-4 hr. drive south.
OTOH, since my beloved ESS passed, I've not diligently hunted said areas w/ a dog--but I've jumped up nary a grouse, nor seen any WC whitewashes in the bottoms in all my exploring/deer hunting since moving here 6 yrs. ago. Trout/bass fishing is great, tho'.
I even perused the birdwatchers' forums for reports--1 or 2 sightings only, and were 'monumental' in the Upstate.
Best Bet if you wanna shoot birds locally would be chukar&hungarian plants at the three preserves within 1 hr. drive of G'ville. PM me if you want details on those---otherwise, enjoy your visit with Family, do some hiking, take in some extraordinary scenery in these WMA's/Parks/River gorges, and look forward to your next upland hunt in PA.

Lucky Strike,
thanks for the response...I have a six month setter that I've shot some grouse, a pheasant and a woodcock back home this year, so she shows promise...Probably the best thing would be to take her to a preserve her for some chukars and work on her pointing , increase her birdiness....
if you can refer me to those preserves, much appreciated.
thanks again,
Happy Holidays!
Terry

Terry,

Hope you're enjoying (or soon will be) your visit to the area!

Game Zone 1 (mountain areas linked above) are still open for deer season, may be safest to NOT run your pup 'in these parts' anyway. Sorry we don't have more to offer in upland gunning, SC used to be a wild quail mecca, sadly no more. Most quail hunting is in the 'LowCountry', done plantation-style.

Here are some local preserves that may interest you:

Best to You, your Family and your Pup!
