I searched and there haven't been any threads in a few years. Wondering if quality has gone up or down on either or both?

I went to my local Walmart to pick up a couple of the 100 pack of universal, but they only had one. I then noticed that individual boxes of super target that broke down to the exact same price!

I know every gun is different and I would only be using it to break clays...with that said, is one technically supposed to be better than the other? When exactly the same price and the only two choices, which would you reach for?

Thanks

Personally, I'd leave them both in the store; Walmart sells better options

Super Targets do a fine job for me. No complaints. What could any other variety do better? With the Mod chokes I use for Sporting Clays, the medium hardness lead pellets give a perfectly satisfactory pattern. No sense paying more.

Does anyone have hard evidence that there is a lick of difference between the two?

And what about Herter’s? Which one are they or do they most closely resemble if there really is any difference between the two. I don’t think there remains any doubt that Herter’s are a Win-made promotional store brand for Bass/Cabela.

I have also bought a Win shell in 8-packs labeled Western and loaded to Super Target weight and velocity specifics.

Good question. I'd also like to know. Winchester Super Targets run well in my O/Us and autoloaders, and they break clays well too. I don't buy Universals because of the many complaints I've heard about them.

I would REALLY doubt there's ANY difference.

The more likely reason for two different lines is that some go through one distribution channel, some go through another.

Same reason you see Federal Top Gun and Federal Clay & Field, same shell different box different distribution channels.

Buy a 4 pack from Walmart for 20 bucks and report back.

If only that were still possible.

The whole reason I asked is they are the same price right now at the moment...the universals break down to about $5.50 a box and the super target are on sale for $5.50 from I think $7 or $7.50.

Usually I just grab the universal but the super target got me wondering? I shoot clay with friends at their property so no competition which why I usually just grab what's cheapest. Up until yesterday, I never even noticed the super targets so that's what got me researching. Like everything, some live them, some hate them...which in my opinion means, some guns cycle them and some don't. I just didn't know if I should be stocking up on the super targets over the universal while they are on sale...if available? Right now, I usually take what I can get.

Super Targets are known for temperamental ejection from some O/Us. Otherwise they work fine. No dirtier than most. Patterns are reasonable. Price is right. Works for me.

I don't shoot many factory loads. The ballistics & the recoil could be different. Some guns will pattern one load better than another for no apparent reason but we are splitting hairs. I would not expect to find any significant difference. Should you want to reload the hulls, I never saw a super target hull but I would think they are probably better for reloading. Winchester has put their name on Cheddite hulls in the past. I don't know if they still do or not.

Except they both use the exact same hull...

And I think Herter’s hulls are the same too. Black if that matters to you at all.

I'm with Skeet_Man on this, other than name and packaging they are the same loads.

"except that they both use the same exact hull"

That comes as no great surprize!

My small skeet club has a lot of shooters who use budget ammo. Of all the low-priced target loads, it seems that Winchester Universal is the one ammo that gained a poor reputation at our club for use in repeaters. I don't recall any complaints with the Super Target. Could be coincidence, but due to that local reputation, I've never purchased any Universals. I have four or five boxes of Super Target on the shelf but have yet to use any.

Super target pattern the best for me of all the promo loads . I did not do universal
But did cut both apart a few years back . They looked the same powder wad and shot .

They got that reputation the old fashioned way, they EARNED it!
