You need a different gunsmith ASAP.

Agreed.
Remington no longer has any parts for the old standard frame 20 gauge 870s or 1100s. So they can't fix it.
I seriously doubt the receiver is worn out. Probably needs new shell latch(es) is all, but sourcing those can be difficult. Possibly the interceptor. Any good 'smith should know an 870 inside out.

I do not trust Remington's dating service accuracy. If they were Match.com, you could end up with Nancy Pelosi.

You need a REAL gunsmith, not Remington, and please reblue that gun. It hasn't needed cera-Koted for a half century, it doesn't need it now. Just have a quality reblue done if you must. You, and your heirs, will appreciate it.

No repairs are being accepted right now. Minimum 3-4 weeks.

1) completely agree on rebluing rather than cerakoting. You have an heirloom, if not quite an antique. Or leave the bluing alone, and give it a wipedown with a little oil after use.

2) This is probably a simple fix. I fixed what sounds like a similar problem on a well-used 12g I bought with just a slight bit of bending of the shell catch. It's complicated a bit by parts availability, but as was said earlier a good gunsmith should be able to problem solve this. A decent machinist probably could too.

I would not touch it. I’ve got an old Model 11 that my grandfather bought in 1934. He shot it, my dad shot it and I shot it. It’s pretty shiny in a lot of places from three generations of use. I would no more reblue it than I would sell it. Why would I erase the memories of my Grandfather and my Dad?

Agree wholeheartedly. Much history and many memories have to be wrapped up in that gun. No way would I cover up those memories. Just take care of the gun with an oily rag.

Keep in mind, 5-7000 rounds is barely broken in. Add a zero and it should be slightly worn.
If you don't mind shipping it we have a really good gunsmith here in CT. Repairs to full restorations. Authorized Remington and Browning repair facility. There has to be someone in CA who could fix it though. Are the rounds not coming out of the magazine, or what is exactly happening?

It ain't old, and it's barely broken in. Any decent gunsmith should be able to fix it in his sleep, and a new bluing as well. Ask around at your club.
