I have always shot 12 gauge for hunting (rabbit, forest birds, turkey, etc) and sporting clays but last year I picked up a CZ 20ga side by side and a cheap single shot also in 20 gauge. Like so many things I now find myself wanting to complete a collection and also buy something my kids can use. I'm looking at the Maverick 88 Youth 20 Gauge. Anything better out there for briar hunting and less than 100 rounds a year?

Probably not, they seem to get good reviews.

I'm not a pump/auto Guy but I gave my nephew a 20 ga. model 870 Rem.. It works & even had a rifled barrel that came with it for slugs. There should be tons of 20 ga. pumps on the used market. I think they all work with the Browning (BPS) being near top of the line. I don't know if they come in 20 ga. but my Cousin bought a Benelli pump for a backup gun for out of state duck hunts.

. Welcome to SGW ! ! The Maverick 88 is a Mossberg 500, and was my pick for converting into a 20ga Shockwave clone.

... Anything better out there for briar hunting and less than 100 rounds a year? Beater and better are opposites. If you say the word beater around your children, the inappropriate message that they will receive is that it is o.k. to beat up some firearms. Welcome to ShotgunWorld, sir.

Maverick's are fine. My father has a 870 Express that has seen its share of beating and still works great. I assume a Mossy 500 would as well.
