I have the opportunity to buy a nice 12 gauge merkel 200 e that was just imported from Germany. It has the case hardened receiver, great blueing, and great wood. 28 inch barrels.

It is all original with no modifications.

Can you give me a idea of what a fair price would be?

Great wood is something of a rarity on a 200E ! I assume it is a double trigger, pistol grip with cheek piece and sling swivels version as about 90% of the 200E production seemed to be configured that way. Chokes were typically very tight. The 50s, 60s and early 70s era guns tended to be valued a little higher than the 80s and 90s era guns.

Can I suggest you check out https://www.save-the-fine-guns.com .
You have to register for their online store (which is free) but I think you'll be quite surprised by how reasonable their pricing is on Merkel 200E models in 12 and 16 gauge. Typically $900 plus 11% excise tax plus $85. So just under or at $1,100. I believe they were offering 30 day inspection / satisfaction so they want you to be happy with your purchase.

You will not see many Merkel 200E s on gunbroker or gunsamerica for $1,100 , that's for sure. More like $1,800 to $2,500 is my guess.

That save the fine gun has great idea and some neat gun listed.

I just had one come in,a 200E 12 ga with a set of 28ga Briley tubes.
Have had a couple of them over the years, this is the first I have seen with straight grip and double triggers-and no cheek piece or sling swivels.
