Watching some videos over the holiday, and seeing a push in many countries for steel, even in a target arena.

Does anybody have experience with light, fast skeet loads in steel (and possibly degradable wads?) Obviously the shot won't be #9, but ISSF mandates 24g.

yes. The NL banned lead about 20 years ago. My buddy Jan Cor shot in Athens in the O games. His best result in a world cup was in Acapulco where he made the final with 122 in the comp with 24 in the final where he took 5th. That was shooting lead. Then, he shot a 123 in the Dutch national championships using steel a year later, thus proving that steel shot is not a handicap when shooting Olympic skeet.

we would shoot 24 grams of #7 or 7.5 steel shot. No problems shooting it in a fixed choke gun, even a Belgian browning. Not so for trap.

What is interesting is that winchester now makes 24 g of steel shot in #9. I didn’t think that steel shot that small had enough mass to break targets at 20 yards or so but maybe they are using a heavier steel.

Jerrys, thanks for the info. Winchester doesn't have anything like that here. They only list 28 grams of 7.5 steel in the US. Certainly not the photodegradable wads.

My only experience was on an indoor range, shooting Kent 7/8 #7 1/2 steel at bunker targets. Lotta "moved or dusted" targets. Not a fan, but that was only one event.

if you were shooting bunker trap, #7.5 steel would not have been enough to get the job done. It would be like shooting #9 lead shot. Because the steel is lighter than lead, you need a heavier pellet, which is why 7.5 steel substitutes for #9 lead. You can shoot #7.5 steel through a browning B25 with fixed skeet chokes. I know this because when the NL went steel only, several members of my club with very spendy B25s drove down to Liege and talked to the smiddies and gun elves there and they got the ok that this combo of choke and steel shot size (sk/sk and #7.5) would not hurt their guns. Not so for any tighter choke and larger shot (again, fixed choke belgian browning skeet guns here).

Those photodegradable shells did not exist when I was there. Ironically, the price of steel is much higher than lead but steel shot costs less than lead shot here. Go figure.
