I am brand new at this, I mean brand new. I have never even loaded a gun before. Mother's day gift, now I have to pick a gun. Low budget, Remington, do I get the 12 gauge or 20 gauge? Simple question I hope. A mama in her 50's. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum MaryJ!

Regret you will find there are no simple questions here. I would recommend before you purchase that you find an instructor (Sporting Clays, Skeet, or Trap) and take a lesson with a rented or borrowed gun. This would give you some expert training and allow you to try before you buy.

I agree with Slickdriver21 above. Once you are hooked, look for a 20 ga. over/under gun like a Browning Citori or something similar. 20 gauge shells are about the same price as 12 ga. and less recoil means more fun (IMO). Lots of competitive skeet shooters shoot 20 ga. in 12 ga. events these days.

Who gave you the gun? I would look to them for advice before I spent money toward any instruction, mainly because you didn't give any indication of what you intend to use the gun for. Letting us know what you intend to do with it would help a lot toward making recommendations.

Hey guys, the OP posted this on May 14, 2014. It is her only post. Her last visit to SW was on May 15, 2014. I wouldn't be looking for a response from Mary anytime soon. {hs#
