I was told a 34" HT carrier barrel would weigh about 4-5 oz more than the factory 12 ga. barrel I have.
To me it would make sense just to get briley ultralites added to my 12ga. barrel adding about 4-5 oz, saving a bunch of money.

has anyone been down this road before?

I like to shoot Fitasc 20ga, and 28Ga.

Thanks

A carrier barrel is overbored to remove weight, which is subsequently added back with subgauge tubes. A carrier barrel can never be shot with 12ga shells.

I think you're misinterpreting something you were told, it's probably that the carrier barrel WITH tubes will weight 4-5oz more than your current barrel WITHOUT tubes.

Yes carrier barrel including tubes would weigh 4-oz more than factory 12 GA. barrel.

12 ga. barrel adding sub gauge tubes would also weigh 4-5 oz

Looks like the Briley tubes weigh about 10-12 oz, so a carrier would match weight better.

That still can't be right. The carrier barrel has metal removed to offset the weight of the tubes, the 12ga barrel does not, so everything else being equal, a carrier barrel WITH tubes will always be significantly lighter than a 12ga barrel WITH tubes.

I know they quote 10-12oz, but it's wrong.

The real number will be 14-16oz.

I don't know how you could ever make a set of subgauge tubes weigh 10oz unless you were tubing a 22" overunder.

I have a 2 barrel set, my carrier barrel with tubes weigh about the same (1 -2 oz) as my regular choke tube barrel.

I have a High Tech on order with 2 barrels intending to make one a carrier barrel. We speced them at 1.570 kg and 1.510 kg. Briley will be doing carrier work with ultimate ultralight tubes. Intention is to match weight across all four gauges. They are 32” barrels with fixed chokes. Sporting clays.

I have a set of Briley tubes that weigh right at 13 oz per sub-gauge pair. I use them in a carrier barrel for my MX-8, and the carrier barrel with tubes weights within about 1 oz of my 12 ga. barrel. The gun has the same feel and balance point whether I'm shooting the 12 ga. barrel or a sub-gauge.
