I've been out of shotgun sports for years and I've missed it. I made the choice to go back to it on a limited basis. I was to Cabela's the other day and looking in their Library at what they had in shotguns. My eye was drawn to a used but unfired Winchester 101 field grade 12 ga.

I had a bad experience with my (then) 101 back in the 70's. The gun kicked like a mule and no matter what I did for it, it didn't help enough to keep it. Every time I went to a gun show, I was always drawn to one of the prettiest guns on the table until I saw that it was a 101. Well...I saw this beautiful gun in the Library and put it to my shoulder and it felt good. I went home and researched the new version to find out that it was redesigned and wasn't my old 101. I took the chance a bought it.

Once home, I took out my electric clay bird thrower and went at it. It wasn't my old 101!! All these years of passing up on the gun, I missed out on a great value and a sweet shooting shotgun.

Those new Winchesters had a rough start when they 1st came out at the turn of the century.
The Selects and Supremes had many quality issues along with forearm cracking.
It looks like all the issues have been fixed with the rebranded 101's now although
it is the same design as those other earlier versions.

I read that the barrels were improved and my complaint about the recoil has been largely tamed. I ran about 100 rounds through it when I got it home and, although my shoulder is a little sore, that had more to do with lack of shooting over the past few years rather than the characteristic of the gun. The gun is now made in Belgium rather than Japan and their redesigning it may be the reason. In any case, I'm glad I took the chance in buying the gun.

I'm glad you enjoy your new gun!
I have had a couple Winchester Select Energy shotguns and really liked them.

Just came back in from shooting another box at some clay birds. I outperformed my hunting partner with his Versa Max. I think my next "find" will be a 101 in 28 ga. There is a gun show coming up on Dec 20th - time to trade my S&W 44 mag w/ 8 3/8" barrel.

I think the Belgium made 101's are only made in 12 gauge.

Yes.

The old original Japanese Olin Kodensha 101's came in 28ga. but haven't been

made in decades. They were great quality lifetime guns but a nice 28ga.example

goes for eye popping money now and good luck getting the barrels choked the way

you want.

That is too much for the gun. I would be looking for a field gun rather than an investment type.

(Just as a side note, jaspo01, your inserted ad for the Springfield Hellcat is right on. I've been carrying/shooting one for the past few months.)
