I am looking at the Mossberg 590 lineup for a woods walk around bear gun. I like the 590A1 heavy barrel but know nothing about the 590 line. I don't know if I would ever want to change barrel or add other upgrades to it. It will be used with Tri-Ball or my reloads of 3 balls .620 die, buck and ball, or 3-4 #4buck and #4 shoot and maybe some slugs. All reloads are with water harden PB. What 590 would you recommend and why? Please educate me on the different 590's.

You might get more/better answers by asking this question on the Mossberg forum.

I have a 590A1 (9 shot 20" barrel) and really like it for home defense, BUT that thick-walled, heavy barrel would be a beast to carry in the woods. For that, I'd get the slightly shorter model and not the A1.

I just weighed mine and fully loaded and some 5 shells in a stock saddle it's over 9.5 lbs

Agreed, at the very least with this sort of shotgun you would be wise to consider an appropriate sling if you really plan on carrying it for more than a few minutes. I used my 9 shot 20" barrel for a shotgun class and it was heavy to carry, but at least it absorbed recoil well.

Sounds like an interesting subject, some sort of nice gun
to have handy while in the outback. It will be interesting to
see what the 590 fans recommend. I looked at galleryofguns.com
to see what the mossberg 590s were doing. The only one
available was 590A1 12M with 20 inch barrel.

This one weighs 7.25 pounds, hold 8 rounds.

You might want to look at the M500 also, because you can problaby
pick one up at Walmart, Sportsmans warehouse or wherever.
The m500 is pretty near the same gun, uses plastic trigger guard
instead of aluminum, but the plastic is pretty durable. I have an
M500, that I changed the stock on and also worked over the bolt
a little bit, I cut a coil off the firing pin spring, because it had a
light hammer fall about one out of fifty times, and that cured that.
I would trust my M500 in any woods I know, but it does only hold
6 shots.

If you are stuck on Mossberg pump that will no doubt work, but you
might find some auto that will work pretty good, like the new M940
might be a good candidate,
