Gentlemen, I am going on a hunt in a couple weeks. Ordered a new Mossberg SA-20. Pretty bad shoulder and can't withstand a box of 12 gauge so went with the 20.

I am not really new to shotguns as I have a few but in the last 30 years have only used them for squirrel hunting and a little skeet shooting.

I have research quite a bit before placing an ammo order and I have found some decent discussions however I have been unable to find something more specific to my upcoming hunt.

We will be hunting released birds. We will have quail, chukar and pheasants.

It looks like I should go with #5 pheasant rounds but it also seems that is too much for the quail and chukar.

Is there a good compromise round since, of course, we won't necessarily know which bird will come up for each shot?

Again it will be released birds and we will be hunting with a guide and dogs. Don't know if they are pointers or flushing dogs.

Any help helping me find the correct ammo to get would be most helpful. I haven't hunted for quail in 30 years and I have never hunted chukar or pheasant.

Thanks again!

If we are hunting pen raised quail and pheasants at the same time I use 2 3/4" 20 ga. high brass with 1 ounce of lead #6 at like 1220 fps.

IMO the standard 20 gauge, 1 oz #6 at 1,165 fps will work just as well and will reduce your recoil absorption. Personally, I don't think the extra velocity is necessary on pen raised pheasants.

Whatever load you decide on, be sure to run a couple boxes of them through the gun in practice before the actual hunt. Some guns are picky about what ammo they will work with. Also, do a good cleaning, degreasing, and lubrication (with light gun oil) of the gun before taking it hunting. Several boxes of shells to help break it in would be advisable.

Oh, on a hunt of any importance, I always take a backup gun (if possible) just in case some bad luck strikes. You don't want to spend big bucks and get all excited about a hunt and then be severely disappointed when your gun fails to operate. This can happen with any gun, but I would be especially leary of a new gun since it hasn't had time to prove its reliability yet.

Thanks again everyone and some good sound advice.

I will run a 100 or so through the gun at a trap field before going and look up some cleaning videos.
