Can you safely shoot steel shot in a regular HD shotgun put out by Mossberg ? Say a regular Mossberg 500 or Maverick model with a fixed choke barrel? My buddy has a 8 shot HD model and asked but I wasn't sure what to tell him. I would think he could but wanted to ask those that would know better than me.

No, not all barrels. Barrels with an interchangeable Accu-Choke™ or Accu-Mag™ choke tube system, yes (with proper tubes installed.) However, steel shot is not recommended for older "C-Lect Choke®" or fixed-choke barrels.

I did see that but was wanting to know if any shotgunners here have used it. Seems strange that it isn't recommended for fixed choke barrels but is ok for Accu-choke or Mag choke systems.
Is not the barrel the same and the end just has a choke system on it? If so then why not fixed choke barrels? Does the wads not protect the barrel enough from steel shot at the choke? And if that was the case then would not the open choke HD barrels be ok?

And if that was the case then would not the open choke HD barrels be ok? It could be that the fixed choke barrels have thinner wall thickness in the choke area. Also, many of the fixed choke barrels may be of the older variety which were never intended for steel shot. That said, if a person has a fixed CYLINDER choke barrel that they know to be fairly new, then they MIGHT get away with shooting steel shot in it... but that's up to them. I'm not saying that it is or that it isn't safe.

No one in their right mind would ever use steel in a HD gun, so that essentially moots the question. You can of course call Mossberg-- they are the ones to ask.

Your opinion? I guess you don't have a answer so negative comments are all you got. Well thank you for time and your well thought out answers.

Me thinks that "negative " comment comes from the HD guns intended use. In an HD use steel is far inferior to lead HD ammo.

You can tell him exactly what Mossberg publishes on their website: https://www.mossberg.com/service/faqs/Quote: Can I shoot steel shot through all barrels?

I would think he could but wanted to ask those that would know better than me. What does it say on the barrel of the gun? I have seen Mossberg barrels that said Chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 IN Shells, 12 GA 18 1/2 IN Cylinder Bore. If there is no choke in the barrel I would shoot steel shot out of it if regulations required non-toxic shot for home defense. If non-toxic shot is not required I would shoot lead.

I think it would be OK to use lead shot in a HD situation unless you're being attacked by a flock of geese... in which case, you would be restricted to steel only.
