Post subject:  Male Dog Doesn't Life His Leg to Pee... (serious question)

OK, please don't laugh at me...
This IS a serious question after all...

Based on feedback from a few key folks -- the breeder of my lab, and the Maine Guide/experienced dog trainer where my 1.5 year old lab goes for doggy daycare 2 days a week and some training sessions -- I am totally comfortable with the fact that my 1.5 year old male lab "squats like a female" to pee. He has never lifted his leg and may never do so.

Yet others will see that, and they think there's "something wrong with my dog"...

The answer I give them is this:

"He's a well-bred hunting dog, from a long line of hunting dogs, who with proper training will excel out in the fields or on a marsh... By the way, how many trees or fire hydrants do you see out on a marsh or out in the middle of a field? My lab can pee where your dog won't know what to do..."

That response usually makes them stop and think, but I'm curious about what this forum thinks...

Seriously, this IS a serious question! Not earth shattering or world changing, mind you, but I'd sure like to know if what I've been told is correct.

Thanks!

Not sure about that one but if it makes you feel better, there is a female Yorkie-Dachsund mix that lives in my house and she does lift her leg when she pees.
“Well bred” might not describe her.

I think it has to do with marking territory. My Brittany did it both ways--squat in the field but always sure to hike up a leg when hosing down the furniture.

My male Chocolate rarely lifted his leg to wiz...rarely...in his 11 years I can count on both hands the number of times he did. Talked with the vet about it and she said it was better for his back, but either way is fine...current one squatted for the first 8 months or so.

My daughter who is a veterinarian tells me that a male dog lifting it’s leg to pee is entirely a learned behavior. I have had male dogs who have never been around other males that still squat like the females.

I think a lot has to do with temperament too. I used to have terriers, and the girls often cocked a leg. Plus, it's not like a male dog has to worry about putting the toilet seat back down....Mary Ann

My neighbor's little spayed female foo-foo dog has adopted my big male German Shorthairs as her pack. When she's allowed to run with the boys, she hikes her leg to pee like the big dogs and marks over their pee marks. Maybe your dog just needs to be allowed to be a dog occasionally and run with the big dogs.

My 13 1/2 year old Golden has almost never lifted his leg, just stands there. My 3 year old English Setter is about 50/50.

Never seen them squat, so can't comment on that, but really haven't worried about the leg lifting.

Wow, thanks -- there's quite a wide variety of thoughts up above!

I won't comment on any in particular...

I'll just keep on believing what the dog's breeder told me, and will save my worries or mental energy on something else.

My Braque only lifts the leg to mark mailboxes, stones and random shelves in stores (no more stores for him). Otherwise he does this lean forward/stretch thing to pee.

Odds on...age.
Give it time...1 1/2 is young.

Hardly a problem for the dog...effort to not to be embarrassed.

"Others" often really do not know much about dogs.
