Hi, Can you guys please steer me in the right direction? I'm looking for a very light weight shotgun to use for grouse & pheasant. I assume 20 gauge and 26" barrels are needed to be light... I'd prefer an O/U just because that's what I'm used to but would certainly consider a semi auto if it was lighter. I spend hours/miles hiking the forest (mountains) for grouse without a dog and hours in more open terrain for pheasants usually with a dog, and a lighter gun would much appreciated at the end of the day. Hopefully I could also go longer/farther with something lighter than the 8lb O/U my old bones are currently hauling around. Thanks for your advice and your time!

Thanks for the info. Yes I understand that generally the lighter the gun the stronger the recoil but I expect to carry it a lot and shoot it a little so that's ok.
So far we have (weights as advertised unless noted): Bertetta A400 Xplor Action no k/o 12g 26" at 6.8lbs (weighed), still need weight of 20g model please. Beretta 686 Ultralight O/U 12g, 26" at 5.95 lbs Franchi Fenice 20g, 26" at 5.6 lbs Yildiz SPZM O/U 20g, 26" 5.6 lbs (weighed) Browning Cynergy Feather O/U 20g, 26" at 5.lbs Franchi 48AL 20g, 24" at 5.5 lbs Benelli Ultra Light 20g, 24" at 5.2
Any more lightweight options or favorites?

The lightest common upland gun is probably the al48 in 28gwhich is in the 5lb range. That said, most people don't shoot light guns well. Any normal 20g these days should be light enough to shoot well and carry well.

I don't like a 24" barrel, so i bought a Montefeltro 20 ga 26" barrel. It is about 5.8# and carries very well. I think anything much lighter is going to get on the too light side. I think I would look at any of the guns that are slightly under 6# as a good weight to carry and shoot.

There is the Beretta 28 gauge A400 that is right about 5# as well

Benelli Legacy 28, 4.9 lb but feels even lighter. Also Beretta AS 20EL, about the same if you can even find one.

In 20 ga O/U, I have a Cesar Guerini, Browning Superposed and Beretta SP1. They would all fit the bill, but the Beretta is the lightest. Be careful though, they fit differently. I wish I could shoot a Browning well but I can't. More drop, neutral cast. I shoot the Guerini the best. You maybe different. I can get a SxS even lighter, find them quicker and prefer them on grouse. That said, I am finding it very hard to stay away from the Benelli Ultralight. It's the first time i have been in love with a SA since my first Rem 1100. I keep telling myself I don't need another gun.

I'd go with 28" O/U barrels, especially for a gun that light, to promote some kind of swing and follow through.

I was always a fan of double guns, especially SXS's. I now mostly use a Mossberg SA20 as it weighs in at 6 pounds. I am recently retired and have found the trails longer and the guns heavier. Also the last good grouse season I had one would get up I would shoot twice with a lightweight 28 double and then another would get up ussually offering a better shot. Its more fun to miss three times than twice. While I am not necessarily recommending the SA20 there are other SA's recommended. A lightweight SA has a receiver length such that a 26" barrel is closer to a double with 29-30" barrels. When you go to a lightweight you have to discipline yourself to settle on target. They can be more squirrelly.

My first twenty o/u was a Beretta Whitewing with 26" tubes. I never did get to the point where I could swing the gun smoothly. I finally sold it in frustration.
Fast forward 15 years. I guess my memory dimmed. Based on some very good reviews I recently purchased a Yildiz 20 SPZ ME with 28" tubes at 5.7#. Same dea,l too whippy and a lot of over swing.
I added 7 oz. of lead to the forend and 7 oz to the butt stock. Amazing difference! Still well balanced and much smoother swing and less recoil. At 6 1/2# still light enough to carry a long way. Of course it is no clays gun, but it is a very functional upland field gun. BTW, both barrels shoot to the same POI and slightly above point of aim. Better than the Whitewing which shot low for me.

My purchase this year will probably be a 12 gauge CZ pump 612 field. Suppose to weigh 6.25 pounds.

Don't forget the Weatherby SA-08. In 28 gauge, it is a very nice carry gun.
