I've been to three of those destinations. But would also include the partridge shooting in
Spain.

Don’t know how I missed this thread when it was new, but....
Some of my favorites:
Downeast Maine- grouse and woodcock
Western Massachusetts- woodcock. Yup, great shooting when the flight birds are in.
New Brunswick- grouse and woodcock. Haven’t hunted birds there, but while up there bear hunting I was tripping over them. Will go back with a shotgun and a dog.
Connecticut- Whitetailed deer. Best kept deer hunting secret there is. Awesome deer herd.
North and East Yorkshire, England- driven pheasant, partridge, and woodcock. Also, waterfowling and goose shooting. Always a great time, and what is better than topping off a day of shooting with a nice sticky toffee pudding.
**not hunting, but....Japan- I’ve enjoyed the Japanese’s countryside, hopping from stream to stream getting after trout. I’ll do it again.
Bucket list- want to shoot red grouse in Scotland or the North York’s. Tentative plans to shoot geese in Scotland this year.

Multiflora,
Canaan Valley, WV - almost as good a Woodcock flight area as Potter County, Oct 15-20. Both places are just incredible. Heaven for Ryman Setter dogs for sure.

Dave B - Pine Creek Grouse Dog Trainers David, my response was a bit conditioned by the noted year...1933. While woodcock traditionally used the spine of the Apps and I suspect they were present to a degree at that time, my thoughts were centered upon the ruffed grouse. The logging and fires created in the previous years and in that time period resulted in an artificial high of ruffed grouse populations....truly high yes, but a high delivered by a manner of Progress few would wish to witness or repeat today. Still, I would like to have run a dog during that time....of any birddog breed. Oh well, "unanswered prayers". Naturally, that Progress was also evidenced across a multi-state area, including PA ...giving all bird hunting folks wonderful days and happy birddogs. The high tho was not sustainable and rightly so for the sole reasons of succession and demand....few of experience today would actually wish a return and, especially, to face the resultant trade-offs of an equivalent environment. Today, Canaan Valley is but a shadow of '33' and continually lives in the growing shadow of timeshares and golf carts, deer leases and leaf peepers. Both birds are out and about, of course, but labeling it a destination today, beyond the appeal and lure of storied ground...would be too far a stretch, for me.

Multiflora, Got to admit I was thinking of how it was in the 50's myself, have not been back sense the 70's and it had changed drastically even then. It was still decent Woodcock gunning, however the great Grouse population had dropped drastically. Walt Lesser and GBE may have gotten the last of the best times, they did enjoy themselves for sure. Never met Walt he ended up with a female Ryman dog I had started for George Ryman long before GBE got his hand on her. Walt also used her to start his Alder Run Kennel. I was mightly proud of Ryman's Blue Heather, I wanted her very badly but had no money to purchase her, from George Ryman, she was sold to another man for more than $800.00 as a started dog. Real good money in that era for a started dog. Heather was worth every penny. Dave B - L.C. Smith Man Some of Ryman's Blue Heather's blood line in my Pine Creek Kennel today.

Just because you don't like someone, there is no good reason to crap up a decent thread like this. I have deleted several postings and the responses to them. If the offenders persist, they will be gone. If you didn't get a special delivery warning message from the forum, it isn't you. I have a light trigger on the ban hammer once a warning is sent.
