New to the site. Looking for any information on a shotgun that was passed to me from my father.

French out of the St. Etienne gunmaking centre. Looks like tubes by Fanget but require additional images of the frame, water-table, standing breech, etc. as well as in focus images of the marks.

Still require a full image of the barrel flats, water-table & toplever if possible. On the toplever, I am looking to see if there is or is not a stop on left side.

For now, I really don't know much 'bout firearms merchant Arquebusier Marty à Ribérac. But regardless, the sculpted Anson & Deeley Body Action frame was made in St. Etienne, France. The >>F & Frères<< stamp is still a bit fuzzy but I am somewhat confident that Fanget made the tubes and assembled the tubeset.

Lovely Church-window sidepanels w/ drop points on the head/neck of the stock.

Cheers,

Well, it doesn't have the V-C(Verney - Carron) stop like seen on the Helice, but no worries. But can you pleasure us w/ an image of the lugs & all the tubeset flats?

Cheers,

Seems that Arquebusier Marty à Ribérac fancied the scalloped frame? The example below is a Type Hélice peddled by Arquebusier Marty à Ribérac. One can see the V-C stop.

Many thanks for the effort. The flats wear the touchmarks of Acier Supérieur (triple épreuve-w/ 3 Crossed Palms????), Canon de Sûreté(Safety Tubes/Barrels), Choke Rectifié(regulated chokes), which were typical for the wares of the Stéphanois mechanics. All of this was advertising as the proofing of arms was voluntary and the St. Etienne mechanics wanted to assure the end user that they were buying quality sporting arms.

This example was proofed using the French T powder.

Thank you so much for all of the information, I greatly appreciate it. Would you have any idea of when it were possibly manufactured? I’ve read everything I can find but can’t find a timetable.

You are not alone, as dating French guns is an art @ the very least. The French adopted the CGS system circa 1889 and chamber lengths were in CM till say about 1912. Then they migrated back to mm(MKS), which is what they were using pre-1889. Really not a hard & fast disconnect, but circa 1900 the T Powder was used. Then it seems that St. Etienne most contributed to the War effort in The First Great War and made few sporting weapons. So without knowing any dates for Arquebusier Marty à Ribérac, a very rough guess was that it was manufactured between 1912 & WWI or post WWI up till WWII? As I said the Calculus for dating French guns is nonlinear @ best......

Just a bit of an add-on.

A similar gun is being offered on-line in France for 400 Euros; call it the same-ish in dollars. Similar A & D scalloped action, drop points, gold inlay and general appearance, but without the side clips. This one is 70mm rather than 65mm and has sling swivels which might look a bit strange to American eyes, but is common on French hunting guns.

Riberac is a delightful small town in the Dordogne in Perigord a big hunting area, notable for waterfowl and wild boar. Be a surprise if your gun hadn't toddled around it at some time.

Not a clue about dates I'm afraid.

Eugene
