How did you know my age? (as of today, 80 years, 8 months and 3 days). I only have a small lighted magnifying glass that I keep in my computer desk drawer and the light is burned out.

You have mentioned you 8 plus decades in other posts. My magnifying glass is definitely bigger, a 4 inch ornate handled one my wife gave me; plus I have a pocket sized one on my reloading bench and a variable 5-20X loupe for the really small stuff.

I have a double barrel 12 gauge Crescent Arms, Peerless model, serial number 275918. can anyone tell me the approximate date of manufacture?

Steve: Dating Crescent guns is mostly a guess. Your 'Crescent Gun No. 6 Peerless' without cocking indicators was made about 1917.

Thanks for the information, that helps a lot. I have a problem with it in that part of the stock is cracked so I have to figure out if it's safe to shoot. I have been in touch with a gunsmith in the meantime too.

Hi. I have a similar request to the posts in this string. My son (9) was given a Cesent double barrel, hammer less, 20 ga. By my father for Christmas. It was owed by my uncle that passed away a few years back. My uncle likely purchased the gun new when he was my son's age. The stock was sawn off and replaced in segments as he grew.

The information in the posts give me a lot of information. I expect that the gun was purchased in NYC at the H&D Folson Co. My grandfather emigrated to NYC after WW1 from Germany and was employed by the Ruperts Brewing Co. On the upper west side of Mannhaten.

The gun has many stories behind it and has taken a significant amount of game including deer. My son is excited to own it. The stock has wear but the metal parts are in excellent condition. We shot it several times, though the post about the type of powder and new age shells makes me nervous. We'll likely put it on the shelve rather than shoot it. He has a .410 that he loves.

I'm curious if my assessments of age are correct: Circa 1935. Serial #287482. Norwalk CT. Peerless Model.

Please do not attempt to use the gun until it has been evaluated by a double gun specialist smith, and be aware the it was made with 2 1/2" chambers.

1. The Gun Length is 47 1/8"
2. The Barrel Length is 32 1/8"
3. The Barrel Measures across the middle 11/16" at end and 7/8" Beginning.
4. The Number 357 is stamped in the metal behind the trigger.... At the Bottom of the Mount Bracket that attaches to the action mechanism.... Into the inside of the forend on both the wood and the metal.

The earliest shotgun made by Crescent was a side lever single that was a continuation of the shotguns the Bacon Arms Co. made during the last few years it was in business.

First Type: Shotguns assembled from old Bacon parts and not marked with the Crescent name. These shotguns were made until late 1892 or early 1893.

Second Type: Model 4 Sidehammer by Crescent. It was a Bacon shotgun assembled from new Crescent made parts and marked CRESCENT F.A. CO. NORWICH, CONN. This shotgun was made until the end of 1895 or early 1896 with Twist barrels.

Third Type: Model 5 of 1896. This gun was a slightly altered version of the Model 4 and was made until 1901, initially with Twist but later Decarbonized barrels.

If your gun is a family heirloom, hang it in a place of honor in your home. Do not attempt to use the gun, with any load.

I have this old single shot break barrel shotgun I am trying to identify, I am inclosing a picture of the receiver, I believe it to be a store brand name shotgun mfg. by Crescent Arms around 1901 but it measures .410 bore and 410 didn't come out until July of 1915 so I'm kind of lost. It has the markings H.S.B.& Co. with the image of a Rooster and the captions RUSSO Chicago. I know H.S.B. & Co. were a sporting goods outlet during that time period, the S/N on the receiver is 30169 which I believe should be around 1901 but the bore size has me completely snowed. If anyone has any input it would be gratefully appreciated. I seems I can't send the picture as I'm getting an error dialog that says "the site can't handle the file right now"

It appears to be a Harrington & Richardson Model 1915, made from 1915 to about 1930
