New user alert!
I am just looking for a value, any info would be greatly appreciated. I have a Beretta BL-5 20 gauge with 28” barrels, not sure on the choke configuration though. It also has the 26” skeet barrels. It’s in great shape, I can’t find any marks, dings or other signs of wear on it. Thanks in advance, and for letting me be a part of the community.

Ellybrewha,

Beretta produced the BL-5 between the years of 1968 and 1973. My last reference for values on Beretta's BL series lists the BL-5 as $725.-(Good), $850.-(V.G.) and $900.-(Exc.). The BL-5 featured a field stock and forearm and 28" barrels bored Modified and Full. No values are given for an extra set of barrels. The BL-5 differed from the other BL series O/U's due to the better fit and finish of the gun

The BL series was preceeded by the Silver Snipe series which did offer an extra barrel set. A 12 gauge or 20 gauge Silver Snipe model with 28" Mod. & Full barrels could be ordered with an extra pair of 26" Imp. Cyl. & Mod. barrels which added an additional 30% to the price.

The BL-5 was also offered in a Trap configuration having 30" barrels choked Imp. Mod. & Full with Monte Carlo stock and a Skeet version with 26" barrels choked Imp. Cyl./Imp. Cyl. Should you wish to shoot skeet with your gun, you may want to consider opening the top barrel of the 26" tubes to Skeet 2 or maybe fitting Briley interchangeable choke tubes to both barrels.

Thank you, DF, I appreciate the information. Since I posted this I have seen price ranges from $600 to over $2000. Seems to be a concensus that the smaller the gauge, the more value the gun holds on the BL’s. Thanks again.

Since the 26" barrels appear to a companion to the 28" barrels, I suspect that they are choked Improved Cylinder and Modified which is fairly common for a field gun. However, the original owner may have specified Skeet #1 and Skeet #2 for the 26" barrels. Chokes on Italian guns are normally identified by stars:

* = Full
** = IM
*** = M
**** = IC

A few Italian makes will I.D. chokes by tenths of a millimeter.

11/10 = .043" X Full
10/10 = .039" Full
9/10 = .035" Lt. Full
7/10 = .027" IM (3/4)
5/10 = . 020" M (1/2)
3/10 = .012" IC (1/4)
2/10 = .008" IC (1/4)
0 = Cyl.

FWIW, Skeet #1 is normally .005" and Skeet #2 is .015" (sort of a light modified).

Both of my Beretta S56E models which are the European predecessor to the American market BL guns are marked near where the barrels enter the monobloc and can be seen when you remove the forend. They are marked with a + sign. ++++ = Improved Cylinder, +++= Modified, ++= Improved Modifed, and += Full. Hope that helps.
