gentlemen.. I inherited a browning A5 in 16 gauge, 27 1/2 inch barrel, vent rib and marked as a modified choke. It is not marked as a Sweet Sixteen.. The serial number is 995xx but there is an 'R' over the serial number which is located just forward of the loading port. I cant find a reference to this on the browning site.. its in really great shape..

R-995xx would be a standard 16 gauge A-5 shipped in 1957. See page 77 of the S-V book.

The Browning site is worthless as far as the Auto-5 goes. Even the data that’s correct only applies to the 12 — but they don’t tell you that. Near the top of this forum is Goad’s 16 gauge date guide that will tell you all you need to know.

Sorry, I shouldn't have used an abreviation like that - I was referring to the Shirley and Vanderlinden book "Browning Auto-5 Shotguns" that focuses on the Belgian FN production of those guns.

While the production date isn't given for your gun, there is a chart showing that R-92550 was shipped on 6/30/57 and R-99999 was shipped 12/31/57. Your gun is very close in number to R-99999, so I would not be surprised if it was produced and shipped near the end of 1957.
