When I saw the illustrations missing I was devistated. Thank you Rudolph for restoring a vital element of this very important thread. Martin’s work and contribution is a source unparalleled for those of us that collect the A5.

Attachment: 7606412A-9CC6-47BB-8341-3807938924FB.jpeg Hi, just inherited an A5 from my late father, I’ve read quite a bit about the number sequences but mine doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. I think it’s 1940’s but am hoping for some help. It’s a 16 gauge with A14779 on the receiver. It says BP on one side of the barrel and CRR with a heart on the other.

Hello and welcome. You have an “American Browning” made by Remington during WWII. Browning recoil and action springs will work in it, as well as Browning friction pieces, but otherwise use Model 11 parts.
The letters on the barrel are the date code, I think. But the Remington experts can decode them for you.

Thanks Rudolph, I figured it was US made but never thought to look at Remington data to decode it but that makes sense as to why it may not align with any of the Browning sequence.

What a thread and knowledge base...Thank You! I've been going through my late father's guns which includes mostly WW2 souvenirs. Today, I picked out his A5 to clean and photograph. I had always assumed this Browning was American made and acquired some time after his return. I was so wrong! The information and diagrams reveal it to be a Belgium made 1927 non imported model A5. It must have been one of his guns he brought back from his duty in Europe. I had no idea!

Hello a7ewizard You’re are a very lucky man. This is a very nice "spécial pour tir aux pigeons" there are not to commun in this side of the Atlantic. I have tried to acquire one for a few years without success. So far, I have seen two grades or models. One, as per the first pic, with engraving which is very similar as a type III (second pic) and the other like yours. Following S&V page 171, the pigeon grade where offer in standard, lightweight and super lightweight versions. They don’t mention any high grade option. I suspect that the early years model didn’t have the engraving and the after-war production came only engraved??

Pre-1951. That’s all we can tell without a serial number.
