Was it 1953 A48 or 1958 A48?

The Guide is updated to include the 1954-1974 Why Series.

Been snowed in by blizzard here in South Dakota for two days. Gots time to get caught up on several items.

Yep! And to clarify, It’s not to discount his very rare and desirable gun. The sarcastic humor is directed at our lack of knowledge about why the Y.

Brothers Goad and Rudolph, it was a 1953 Browning, not FN. Gave it to my Uncle who introduced me to shooting and had always regretted trading a Sweet he had back in the 70's. One of those times things come full circle.

The why series, LOL. Somehow reminds me of being in college in western PA and the Youngstown OH radio station played nothing but disco. It was called Y 103, and after one too many songs we called it WHY? 103.

I have serial number x27385... from what the first post states is should be stamped as a sweet 16 but has no sweet 16 stamp/verbiage on it. It has beautiful engraving on it and says it was made in by FN in Belgium... thoughts?

I also own an Auto 5 12 gauge lot number 335. Any historians here with info on it? I know it was part of the first 500 A5’s ever made but I’d love to know more and am hoping there are some on here that could share their wisdom.

Thanks!

Engraving the name on the receiver began in 1948, but not all the Sweet Sixteens made that year have it. Before that those guns were identified by their gold triggers and safeties. Your gun was made in 1949 and should have the engraved name — if it’s a Sweet Sixteen. About half the X prefixed guns were standard models. If yours has the gold parts, and the lightening cuts, it’s a Sweet and something of an anomaly.

As for your 12, I’m not sure what a lot number is. If you mean serial number, it is indeed one of the first 500 and deserves its own thread. With pictures.

1953, it had the matching number on the barrel ring.
