Does anyone have actual experience with an Aimpoint S1 red dot sight mounted on an Auto 5 barrel? The reciprocation of that barrel would be pretty tough but, just maybe...

I wouldn't even consider this with anything other than an Aimpoint brand sight.

I see plenty of receivers tapped for scopes, why not mount it there?

Simplicity.

I picked up a vent ribbed Auto 5. I already had an S-1. Put both together.
Seriously though, I know there are lots of T-1s and H-1s mounted on top of reciprocating pistol slides and running well so I suspect this is do-able. Still, it is a shotgun...

Well, that barrel moves awfully fast and will subject that sight to incredibly high G’s. If it comes off, it’s headed straight for your eye. And by the way, you should know that if you’re thinking of tapping the rib, the rib is hollow. You might get away with it on a Remington Model 11 as the rib is not only solid but forged as part of the barrel blank.

There are a lot of Aimpoints riding the slides on 1911 pistols, I think they would do just fine on an A5 barrel. Call Aimpoint and ask.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish, exactly? It sure sounds like an innovative way to destroy an A-5 barrel. The rib isn't designed to hold stuff on.

What is your intended use of the gun? That might influence the solutions available.

I like a red dot sight for shooting slugs. (Tried one on clay birds, it didn't work as well as the bead.)

I have a red dot sight that fits on a vent rib barrel (no drilling or tapping is required). I have a vent rib barrel. See where this is going?

Aimpoint, who I will ask about this slightly obsolete application, designed the S-1 to work on a vent rib barrel. So the minor consternation here seems misplaced. It was a question asked, not a pronouncement of delivered wisdom. The answer, so far, appears to be "No, I have no idea if this works." Less caffeine everybody.

I did find a guy on you tube who did this for a turkey hunting Sweet 16. He looks like a pretty low round count kind of guy though.

The area of concern is not the Aimpoint, it is the fragile rib of the A-5 that is easily dented and bent as is. You can check with Art's Gun Shop and you'll get good advise.

I have to qualify my reply first with a disclaimer: I personally would not put a sight on my auto five. Since we are talking about your auto five, If I did choose to do so I would mount it to the receiver rather than the barrel. That would give you a solid mount. The fact that you have doubt about mounting it to the barrel would be answer enough for me.

The Aimpoint wouldn’t last long mounted to an A5 barrel. Neither might the rib.

The Aimpoint wasn't designed for a reciprocating ribbed barrel, it was designed for a fixed barrel shotgun, see where this is going?

I haven't had any caffeine and you have received excellent advice from some very knowledgeable members, heed it.

I understand the reasoning for slugs.

If it were me, I'd look at one of the reflex type sights as a lot lighter (Like a Docter)

If we look at weight:

Aimpoint S1: 100g
Aimpoint Acro: 62g (New smallest sight for pistols)

Shield Mini Reflex Sight (Waterproof): 17.5g

Whatever acceleration an Auto 5 barrel will put on a sight mount, the Shield will put a lot less back into the rib.

Or if you can find a genuinely abused Auto 5, restore it so it functions well and add the replacement barrel of your choice and drill and tap the receiver.

Give something that was an old dog a new lease of life by giving it some new tricks?

Rear sight silver soldered to non rib A5 barrel stays put. Problem I had was keeping the sliding ramp sight part secured by the elevation adjustment screw. Good for 5 shots and then it would slip regardless of how much it was tightened. Anything attached to the rib is going to move unless securely screwed down. Then i would be very concerned about resulting rib damage. Unfortunately, my experience to tell about.
