I have a question about the finish on the stock and fore-end on the 1952 DA I bought almost a year ago. The varnish is in pretty good shape and the colour is similar to other 1950's Brownings I have (dark reddish brown). However the checkering looks very light in colour, almost like it has been re-cut but not varnished or oiled or sealed.

Does anyone know if that was how the checkering actually looked when the guns were new? If not, what would be the best way to protect what looks like bare wood? I was thinking of rubbing teak oil (mix of linseed oil, tung oil and petroleum naphtha) into the bare wood.

Here is a link to a pic of the pistol grip:

I can’t comment on how the DA’s checkering looked new ( I wasn’t born for another 7 yrs  ) but it’s not uncommon to find checkering lighter in tone than the surrounding wood. Very nice year by the way ! I’m sure you know , but the were introduced in Europe a couple years before their debut in the states.. great gun , I don’t understand why they weren’t well received overseas . I love mine !

We need pics!
I would contact Art's gun shop. They would be able to tell if redone.
Have you tried a factory letter on your DA?
Some of these very low serial numbers trace to the Browning family.

That checkered grip sure does not look to be original. I agree with the OP in that it looks to me like someone went over it and then did not add any finish. If that is a crack I see as a dark line maybe that is the reason after a repair was done.

That has been worked on. Still could be a very nice piece! It looks like 2 bbls also.
