I picked this superposed up today. I have always admired the superposed, and loved the engraving. Can anyone tell me about the engraver? It is double signed VanderMissen.

He would only engrave guns with beautiful wood.

That's a beautiful shotgun! The engraving looked very familiar to me and eventually I remembered it is almost identical to one I'd seen recently that was engraved by L. Cortis. Did Browning just offer certain factory stock patterns of engraving and those patterns were executed by different engravers??? If you want to see the exact same game scene carved by a different engraver you can see it here. Just curious, does yours have two rabbits on the trigger guard?

That is just one DARN purty shotgun! I know I should not be, but the checkering pattern and execution is as riveting to me as the engraving. Some guys have ALL the nice toys!

Yes, it does have two rabbits on the trigger guard. I believe they had a standard pattern then the engraver was given some freedom on the execution of the work. If you look close they are all similar, but different. I will check your gun out!

Oyeme- I know what you mean about the checkering. It is truly a work of art. I can believe how fine the work is and how great it feels in the hand. I make the work on current production citori's look really crude!

Thanks for the reply! I wonder if there is a catalog that still exists that shows the various engraving options? Did a buyer just choose a scene and Browning assigned the next free engraver to the task??? Oh, and that IS NOT my gun in the link! I wish! That is a $16,000 dollar Diana grade, SuperLite Superposed, but I do fancy that straight stock. I just have a plain Jane, unembellished, 1966, 12 gauge that was my Grandfather's. Nothing NEARLY as fancy as yours!

I know that the patterns are in the Schwing Superposed book. I am sure that you could also find them in catalogs of the era. I also would think that you could have something non-standard if your pockets were deep enough. Nothing wrong with a grade 1 superposed, especially one from your Grandfather! They all feel amazing in your hands.

Beautiful. It looks like a standard post-war Grade V or from 1960 onward the Diana Grade. Here from the 1966 catalog --

The Browning Superposed book, by Ned Schwing is a valuable resource.
Out of print and a bit expensive, but worth it.
