Purchased the only one of these prototype guns I have ever seen for sale.
Does anybody know anything about them?
I have only seen them in the “Browning Auto-5 Shotguns” book from Mr. Shirley and Mr. Vanderlinden. Page 236

Here’s the pic, gun will be coming in next 3-5 days.
Goad what you think about this one?

Don’t know. Mine also has a small pic on page 153 under the sweet 16 2nd gun labeled “16-gauge Browning Automatic Shotgun, lightened model” with same sculpted frame.
This gun has been converted by another Heathen to 2 3/4” but I don’t understand 3 steps at barrel extension? Will post more pics when it arrives. I had just purchased my first straight stock 16 2 weeks ago and this thing popped up, I got to quit web shopping! But wow this one is kinda crazy.

I am very interested in the serial number on this one. I remember devoting too many hours searching for a pre-1936 “lightened” 16ga.

Very nice find!!!

Already noticed 3 digit number on breach block doesn’t match serial number on action. Serial number is 1927 number

The function, comfort, feel, and appearance of the straight stock make it my favorite.

If you have a pre-1936 lightened 16ga, we are going to need clear pics of anything and everything lightening the receiver, barrel ring, and stock.

It will qualify for news and maybe updating the Guide.

No serial number on barrel but all others match, action, forend and 3 digits on screws, and bolt ( forgot numbers were upside down on bolt lol)
Barrel is 21 3/4” uncut has full choke, fixed ejector but chambers was lengthened to 68mm
Stock 13 3/4” lop over correct fn plate all looks original.
Pretty sad that bubba opened the ejection port.
Will post many pics of gun after it’s cleaned. Also will mic barrel to guestimate wall thickness, dang thing feels less than 6lbs but will weigh ASAP.
I think entire barrel was turned, missing acier and normal date codes.Does have inspectors marks on barrel extension and loop.

Gun weighs 6lbs 5 oz, bore measures .668, choke .038, chamber 68mm
Gun shoots 2 3/4 and 2 1/2 with all my barrels tried 4 of them tonight.
Stock has a crack on one side.
Will have art rust blue ( true slow rust blue), repair and refinish original wood.

No other marks on barrel and barrel thickness same as my other 1927 barrels.

Any body have any other info on these lightened models?

Cool old gun! I would get the wood crack repaired and leave As Is. To my eyes it looks better in its current condition.

Found same D and 3 marks on my other 1925-27 gun and barrels so I believe these are just inspector marks. Gun is getting slow rust blued with nitre blue screws, trigger and safety. Wood being repaired and oiled finish. Fitted another 25.5” cylinder barrel to this gun and original plus 2 others being blued to match. Anybody have any other information on these lightened( sculpted) 16s?
Should have this thing back In October.

Prototype is a strong word. The straight stock was common for the European market guns. It looks early. What are the first three serial numbers?

“Browning Auto-5 Shotguns” book from Mr. Shirley and Mr. Vanderlinden. Page 236 References “ ...FN prototype; note sculpted frame” and shows an engraved gun with same sculpted frame down to the cut outs in trigger guard. But this pic is of a 12 gauge I Believe due to location of magazine stop location.
Also same sculpted frame called a lightened model under sweet 16 section, 2nd gun pic same book.
Looking for more pics or information on these guns?

I think so too. Your barrel has a step on it that mine don’t. Explains the additional steps in front of the barrel extension also. The original, then when it was turned, another when it was converted to 70mm.

First 2 are normal, extension plus normal step, forend was modified for 2 3/4in, third step was extra but has 1925-27 inspectors D stamp so was done at factory I believe. This action is spitting image of fn pic above labeled prototype but also same sculpted frame in fn pic labeled 16ga lightened model, see pages above. I will not copy those pics from a5 book due to respect for the authors who have given us so much info. Everyone buy their book!

Normal marks still could have been sanded/carded off by heathen that opened ejection port and blued/ refinished.
