Thanks for the picture!

The H denotes a standard weight 12, and it was made in 1955.

looking at a superposed in 12 gauge serial # 99949 S9. am I correct in thinking its a 1962 build yr? if going by the serial # only what would the S9 stand for? is it possible this could be a salt gun? I see some corrosion were the wood meets the metal not huge but defiantly seen use over the yrs. any idea on the value?

S9 = 12gauge, 1969. That falls in the Salt Wood years.

I don’t use the Browning site. This is much better:

Good afternoon all,

Like others here I’m a bit confused on how to decipher the serial # on a gun I’m considering purchasing. It is out of state but I did have the pawn shop provide the serial # from the receiver. It looks like a BPS but the seller said it was a Browning Field Model with a fixed choke barrel. He didn’t see anything stamped to indicate what choke it was?

I’d like to determine the year of manufacture and if by the serial number would I be able to tell what choke barrel it is? I referenced the nramuseum link under Browning but couldn’t find anything that matches.

Ther serial number provided to me was: 07421RFXXX

I’d be much appreciative if someone can help shed some light on this for me? Thank you in advance!

CG

My best guess, xxx is the configuration code and is probably 152 or T52. And 0742 is the serial number.

RF should be the date code, but although R stands for 7, there is no F. I’m thinking the dealer typed the wrong letter.

Thanks for the reply Rudolph31. I’m thinking the F could be a P and am going to see if they can send me a photo of the serial #.
